The Velická Valley to Sliezsky dom hike is a moderate out-and-back day walk in the High Tatras of northern Slovakia. Starting at Tatranská Polianka, it climbs about 6.5 km one-way to Sliezsky dom beside Velické pleso, with roughly 680 m of ascent. The route suits hikers who want a straightforward, well-marked mountain valley walk with alpine scenery, a hotel at the turnaround, and no technical ground — but a steady climb throughout.

Route Overview

Begin in Tatranská Polianka, a spa settlement on the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) line and reachable by car via Cesta Slobody. The route follows the green-marked forest trail, with a parallel asphalt service road option, up Velická dolina towards Sliezsky dom. Key points are Velický most, around one hour up, the Velická Poľana junction, then the final rockier pitch to Velické pleso and Sliezsky dom at 1,670 m. Return the same way; this is an out-and-back, not a loop. For tougher nearby objectives, compare the Kriváň Summit Trail or the longer Low Tatras Ridge Trail.

Mountain shelter history below Gerlachovský štít

Velická dolina was used by shepherds before 19th-century tourism expanded in the High Tatras. Sliezsky dom reflects that shift: the first stone shelter here was built in 1871, destroyed by avalanche in 1874, and followed by later wooden and larger lodges. A mid-20th-century house burned down in 1962; its replacement opened in 1968 and was reconstructed in 2009–2011. The name means “Silesian House”, after the Silesian section of a tourist association linked to an early building.

Notable highlights

  • Velická dolina: A terraced glacial valley below Gerlachovský štít, with forest and dwarf pine giving way to alpine meadow and rocky upper ground.
  • Velické pleso: A glacial tarn at about 1,665.5 m beside Sliezsky dom, forming the natural turnaround point of the hike.
  • Sliezsky dom (1,670 m): The highest full-service mountain hotel in Slovakia, with meals, refreshments, rooms and shelter at the top of the route.
  • Gerlachovský štít (2,654.4 m): The highest peak of the High Tatras and Slovakia, dominating the head of the valley.
  • Velický vodopád: A roughly 15 m glacial waterfall above Sliezsky dom and Velické pleso — an optional extension reached only by continuing beyond the listed hike on the green trail.
  • Green-marked trail: Clear waymarking and good surfaces make navigation simple, though the climb remains sustained.

Challenges to expect

The route is technically undemanding, but the 680 m ascent from Tatranská Polianka is continuous and can feel harder than the surface suggests. Expect forest path, asphalt road options, dwarf pine, alpine meadow and a rockier final section. High-Tatra weather changes quickly, so carry layers even in summer. Stay on marked trails in Tatra National Park; wild camping is prohibited. For a very different Slovak day hike, see the Kláštorská Gorge Trail.
