Edmund's Gorge to Hřensko is an easy 6.5 km gorge walk in Bohemian Switzerland National Park (České Švýcarsko), in far northern Czechia on the German border. It is a short one-day route, usually done as a half-day to full-day outing, linking Hřensko with Edmund's Gorge (Edmundova soutěska), Wild Gorge (Divoká soutěska) and Mezná or Mezní Louka. It suits hikers who want dramatic sandstone canyon scenery without a major climb, but the route depends on ticketed punt-boat sections.

Route Overview

The walk is naturally point-to-point: most hikers start in Hřensko, where the Kamenice meets the Elbe, then follow the riverside approach into Edmund's Gorge and onward to Wild Gorge before finishing towards Mezná or Mezní Louka. It can also be walked in reverse, done as an out-and-back from Hřensko, or folded into a much longer day with Pravčická brána. The core route uses forest and gravel valley paths, boardwalks, bridges, rock steps and short sandstone tunnels, with two gorge sections passable only by punt boat. For more Czech sandstone terrain, compare the Jetřichovice Lookout Trail and Kokořínsko Rock Formations Trail.

How the Kamenice gorges opened to hikers

The gorges were developed for visitors by the Mountain Association for Bohemian Switzerland, founded in Děčín in 1878, with funding from Prince Edmund Clary-Aldringen, after whom Edmund's Gorge is named. Ferdinand Gorge opened in 1881, Edmund's Gorge in 1890, and Wild Gorge in 1898. Italian workers carved pedestrian tunnels and built the boat infrastructure. Ferdinand's Gorge has been closed to the public since 1939. After the 2022 wildfire, Edmund's Gorge reopened to boat tours on 19 July 2025.

Notable highlights

  • Edmund's Gorge (Edmundova soutěska / Quiet Gorge): The main narrow canyon on the Kamenice, with a navigable stretch cited as about 900–960 m. The punt-boat ride takes around 20 minutes, with ferrymen pointing out rock formations.
  • Wild Gorge (Divoká soutěska): The second canyon is roughly 450 m long and is reached on foot from Edmund's Gorge along a path of about 1.5 km. Its boat ride takes around 15 minutes.
  • Punt-boat rides: Two gorge sections are impassable on foot and are crossed by flat-bottomed boats poled by ferrymen. This is the defining logistical feature of the route, not an optional add-on.
  • Kamenice River: The river carved the sandstone gorges and flows through Hřensko to meet the Elbe. The valley keeps the walk low, sheltered and often damp underfoot.
  • Hřensko: This border village is the western gateway to the gorges and sits where the Kamenice joins the Elbe. It is the usual start or finish for the route.
  • Pravčická brána nearby: This natural sandstone arch is often combined with the gorge walk on a longer 15–18 km circuit. For another Czech rock-region itinerary, see the Golden Trail of the Czech Paradise.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy walk, but not a dry, all-weather stroll. Expect wet boardwalks, muddy or slippery valley paths, rock steps and queues or capacity limits for the boats. The gorge boats operate only April to October, and Edmund's Gorge tickets are bought in person at the Hřensko information centre on the day. Dogs and prams are not carried on the Edmund's Gorge boats.
