The Idrija Mercury Trail is a short heritage walk in Idrija, western Slovenia, listed at 6.5 km and usually done as a half-day to full-day outing. It is best treated as a town-and-valley loop linking Idrija’s UNESCO-listed mercury-mining monuments rather than a single firmly attested official trail. Difficulty is easy to moderate: expect cobbled streets, steps, pavements and a near-level canal-side path. It suits walkers who want industrial history, museums and a low-altitude route based from Idrija.

Route Overview

Start and finish in Idrija town centre, commonly at or near the Tourist Information Centre. A practical loop links Anthony’s Shaft (Antonijev rov), Gewerkenegg Castle and the Kamst waterwheel, then follows or samples the Rake water channel towards Wild Lake (Divje jezero) before returning to town. The closest signed comparators are the 1.5 km urban heritage walk, “Idrija - the 500-Year Story of the Mercury Mine”, and the roughly 5–5.3 km Kamst / Mercury Mine - Rake loop. No verified transport stage is needed: this is a circular day walk based in Idrija. For another Slovenian heritage-focused walk, compare the Žiče Charterhouse Trail; for longer river walking, see the Drava River Trail.

Mercury Mining History in Idrija

Mercury was discovered at Idrija around 1490, making it Slovenia’s oldest mining town and, for centuries, one of the world’s major mercury producers, second only to Almadén. The state took over the mine in 1580. Anthony’s Shaft, Gewerkenegg Castle, the Rake canal and the Kamst waterwheel show how mining engineering shaped the town. Commercial mining wound down in the 20th century, and Idrija’s mercury heritage was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.

Notable highlights

  • Anthony’s Shaft (Antonijev rov): The oldest part of the Idrija mine, dug in 1500, only about a decade after mercury was discovered here. The guided underground tour runs roughly 1,200 m past mine displays and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity.
  • Kamst waterwheel: An 18th-century wooden pumping wheel built in 1790 and measuring 13.6 m across. It pumped water from the mine and is one of Idrija’s clearest pieces of industrial heritage.
  • Gewerkenegg Castle: Built in 1522–1533 by the mine’s owners as an administrative and storage centre. It now houses the Idrija Municipal Museum and its mercury-mining exhibition.
  • Rake water channel and Wild Lake (Divje jezero): The Rake is a roughly 3.5 km canal built in the late 16th century to feed mine waterwheels. It leads towards Wild Lake, a karst spring protected as a natural monument since 1967 and the source of the Jezernica, at about 55 m Slovenia’s shortest river.
  • UNESCO mercury heritage and Idrija lace: Idrija’s mercury heritage was UNESCO-listed in 2012 together with Almadén in Spain. The town is also known for bobbin lace, added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2018.

Challenges to expect

The walking is not physically demanding, but the town section has cobbles, stairs and pavements that can be slippery in wet weather. The Rake path is easier underfoot and nearly level. The main planning issue is navigation: local bodies market several themed mercury walks, not one clearly verified 6.5 km official route. Check the current map and opening times for Anthony’s Shaft, Gewerkenegg Castle and the Kamst waterwheel before setting out. For a much longer Slovenian option, see the European Long-Distance Path E6.
