The Sentiero delle Meraviglie is an easy 7 km circular day walk from Novaggio in the Alto Malcantone area of Ticino, southern Switzerland. Waymarked as SwitzerlandMobility route 634, it follows forest paths, gravel tracks and short village sections through the Magliasina river valley, linking mills, mines, castle ruins, murals and the Aranno hammer mill. It suits families and hikers wanting a half-day cultural walk rather than an alpine route.
Route Overview
The loop starts and finishes in Novaggio, where there is free parking and postbus access from Lugano. The marked path runs through the wooded Magliasina valley between Novaggio, Ponte di Vello and Aranno, with Miglieglia on or near the route. Expect repeated short climbs and descents rather than one long ascent, with about 350 m of cumulative gain and a high point around 655 m. Follow the yellow SwitzerlandMobility hiking signs for route 634 and the interpretive boards at the trail’s themed stations. For other Swiss day hikes, compare the nearby Ticino viewpoint walk Cardada Cimetta Panorama Trail or the Jura routes Creux du Van Circular Trail and Chasseral Ridge Walk.
A living museum of rural Malcantone
The Sentiero delle Meraviglie is a modern themed culture trail built around genuine relics of Malcantone’s pre-industrial economy. In the chestnut woods and along the Magliasina river it links water-powered mills and forges, charcoal kilns, dry-stone walls, terraces, a ruined castle and 19th-century gold and silver mine workings. Its emblem is the Aranno hammer mill, described as the last lever-operated water hammer in Switzerland, which forged iron tools until 1951.
Notable highlights
- Aranno hammer mill (Maglio di Aranno): The centrepiece of the walk, this water-powered forge hammer now houses a small museum showing how tools were made using water power. It is open April to October, daily except Mondays.
- Maglio waterfall and pool: Beside the hammer mill, the Magliasina drops into a small pool. In summer it is a practical cooling-off stop rather than a distant viewpoint.
- Mulino di Vinera: A restored watermill where chestnuts and cereals were once ground. Information boards explain the mill’s history and technology as one of the trail’s themed stations.
- Castello di Miglieglia ruins: Scant medieval castle remains near a picnic area, probably linked to an old communication route through the valley.
- Old gold and silver mines: Traces of 19th-century workings, including Baglioni and Franzi, where small quantities of gold, silver, zinc and sulphur were sought.
- Novaggio murals: The start village has painted open-air murals, adding an art-focused counterpoint to the mills, mines and forge heritage.
Challenges to expect
This is an easy walk, but not flat. The route is continually up and down on forest paths, gravel, dirt, cobbled or paved village sections and uneven natural ground, so sturdy shoes help. Wet leaves, stones and riverside sections can be slippery after rain. Navigation is straightforward on yellow route 634 waymarks, but check opening times if the Aranno hammer-mill museum is part of your plan.
