The Bezbog to Popovo Lake Trail is a 7.5 km out-and-back day hike in Pirin National Park, Bulgaria. Starting high at Bezbog hut, it reaches Popovo Lake, the largest and deepest glacial lake in the Pirin Mountains, then returns the same way. The route is easy, well waymarked and usually takes 3–4 hours of walking, making it a good choice for beginners, families and hikers wanting a short alpine walk without a major climb.

Route Overview

The walk starts at Bezbog hut beside Bezbog Lake, reached by the old chairlift from Gotse Delchev hut near Dobrinishte. From the hut, follow the green waymarks south-west across open alpine meadows, dwarf-pine slopes and stony ground below Bezbog Peak. The path climbs and dips towards the Popovski cirque, crossing a saddle/high point of about 2,377 m before descending to Popovo Lake at about 2,234 m. Return to Bezbog hut on the same route. Pirin National Park and the Legend of Popovo Lake

This route lies inside Pirin National Park, declared in 1962 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Popovo Lake means “Lake of the Priest” in Bulgarian, linked to legends of a drowned priest whose cap became the lake’s small islet. One version involves Ottoman pursuers; another tells of a clash with the Slavic god Perun, a name connected with the possible origin of “Pirin”. Bezbog hut and its Soviet-era chairlift later made this high alpine area much easier for walkers and skiers to reach.

Notable highlights

Popovo Lake (2,234 m): The largest and deepest glacial lake in the Pirin Mountains, with a small islet and an irregular pentagon shape. It is the main destination and the best place to pause before turning back.
The Popovski cirque peaks: The lake sits in a glacial amphitheatre enclosed by Sivria, Dzhano, Kralev Dvor, Momin Dvor and Dzhengal. These high summits give the route its strongest alpine feel.
Bezbog hut and Bezbog Lake: The walk begins beside a glacial lake at about 2,236 m, below Bezbog Peak. The hut is useful for toilets, food and drinks before or after the hike.
The old chairlift: The single-seat chairlift from Gotse Delchev hut saves a long forest climb and takes roughly 30 minutes. Check its operating times before committing to the route.
Alpine meadows and dwarf-pine slopes: Much of the route is above the treeline, crossing open grass, mugo pine and rocky ground. It is short, but still feels like a proper high Pirin walk.

Challenges to expect

The route is easy, but it is still high-altitude alpine terrain. Expect rocky, uneven sections near the cirque, short climbs and descents, strong sun, cold wind and fast weather changes. Fog and afternoon storms can make navigation harder, so carry layers, water, sun protection and a map or GPS. The chairlift has set summer hours; miss the last descent and you face a long walk down.
