The GR654 (Via Lemovicensis) is a waymarked Camino route across central France, starting at Vezelay in Burgundy and heading south-west towards the Pyrenees. This listing uses around 725 km and about 30 days as the planning figure, with a moderate difficulty rating. It suits walkers who want a quieter French pilgrimage route than the busier Le Puy way: terrain is rolling rather than mountainous, but the length, daily distances and more limited accommodation demand careful stage planning.

Route Overview

The Via Lemovicensis begins at the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vezelay and runs as a linear, point-to-point pilgrimage across the Morvan, Berry, Creuse, Limousin, Perigord and Gascony. From Vezelay it splits: a northern branch via Clamecy, Cosne-sur-Loire and Bourges, and a southern branch via Nevers, reuniting around Gargilesse-Dampierre / Neuvy-Saint-Sepulchre. The route then continues via Benevent-l'Abbaye, Limoges, Perigueux, Bergerac, Mont-de-Marsan, Ostabat and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port if followed to the Pyrenees. Pilgrim road of the Codex Calixtinus

The Via Lemovicensis is one of the four great French roads to Santiago de Compostela described in the 12th-century Codex Calixtinus. Its name comes from Limoges, Latin Lemovicensis, after the Lemovices. Medieval pilgrims gathered at Vezelay, whose abbey claimed relics of Mary Magdalene, then travelled through Bourges or Nevers, Limoges and Perigueux towards the Pyrenees. The modern GR654 / Voie de Vezelay revives this itinerary with GR and Compostela waymarking.

Notable highlights

Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, Vezelay: The starting point on the “eternal hill”, this Romanesque pilgrimage church is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major landmark before the route leaves Burgundy.
Bourges, northern branch: Bourges adds Saint-Etienne Cathedral and the Palais Jacques-Coeur to the route, making the northern branch especially strong for medieval architecture.
Gargilesse-Dampierre: A Creuse valley village listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, close to where the Bourges and Nevers branches reunite.
Limoges and the Limousin: Limoges gives the Via Lemovicensis its name and sits amid the green, hilly Limousin plateau; it is also known for porcelain and enamel.
Perigueux and the Perigord: Perigueux is dominated by Saint-Front Cathedral, part of the Camino routes listing, before the trail enters the gentler valleys of the Dordogne.
Bastide towns of the south-west: The route passes medieval bastides such as Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, known for arcaded market squares, before crossing Gascony towards the Pyrenees.

Challenges to expect

The GR654 is not technically difficult: expect forest tracks, farm lanes, quiet roads, rolling hills and river valleys rather than high mountains. The main challenges are cumulative distance, 20–25 km walking days, and accommodation that is more limited than on the Le Puy way or Camino Frances. Summer can be hot on exposed farmland, while the Limousin plateau is notably wet; some pilgrim lodging closes outside the main season.
