The Rebun Island Flower Path is the Momoiwa Observatory Course, a roughly 6.4 km point-to-point day hike on Rebun, Japan’s northernmost inhabited island off north-west Hokkaido. This moderate, beginner-friendly route links Kafuka with Shiretoko in about 3 hours, following coastal ridges, flower meadows and cliff-top paths inside Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. It suits hikers planning a short but exposed wildflower walk in Japan, rather than a multi-day route such as the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route or Michinoku Coastal Trail.

Route Overview

Walk north to south from the Momoiwa trailhead above Kafuka port, or start directly from the ferry terminal, and finish at Shiretoko at Rebun’s southern tip. The route climbs on paved and maintained path to Momoiwa Observatory, then continues on unpaved earth and grassy ridge tracks along the island’s exposed west coast. Key points include Momoiwa, the flower meadows around the observatory, Neko-iwa, Motochi Lighthouse, Kinbai Valley and the final descent towards Shiretoko. This is a one-way hike, so plan local bus logistics or a return transfer. Access to Rebun is by ferry from Wakkanai to Kafuka.

Rebun’s ‘floating island of flowers’ setting

Rebun is a small island about 20 km north to south, lying in the Sea of Japan off Hokkaido’s north-west coast. Its harsh northern climate allows alpine plants to thrive at unusually low elevations, giving the island its nickname, the “floating island of flowers”. The whole island sits within Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, and the Momoiwa course is the best-known of Rebun’s waymarked trekking routes. Do not confuse it with the separate 8-Hour Course from Cape Sukoton, which is much longer and harder.

Notable highlights

  • Momoiwa, or Peach Rock (250 m-high formation): This peach-shaped rock above Kafuka gives the route and observatory their name, and marks the most recognisable landmark near the start of the walk.
  • Momoiwa Observatory (roughly 230 m): The route’s high point sits among dense alpine flower meadows, with views over the cliff-lined west coast and across the strait to Mount Rishiri on clear days.
  • Endemic Rebun flowers: Rebun usuyukiso edelweiss, Rebun atsumoriso lady’s-slipper orchid and Rebunsou are among the island’s notable endemic plants, drawing botanists and photographers in early summer.
  • Alpine flowers at sea level: Rebun’s cold climate lets plants normally associated with higher mountains in Japan bloom close to the sea, making the short trail unusually rich for wildflowers.
  • Motochi Lighthouse and west-coast cliffs: The southern half of the route follows exposed green sea-cliffs past Motochi Lighthouse, with the Sea of Japan beside the trail.
  • Views of Mount Rishiri: On clear days, the volcanic cone of Rishiri-zan, often called Rishiri Fuji, dominates the eastern horizon across the water.

Challenges to expect

The trail is short and beginner-friendly, but it is not a paved promenade throughout. Expect muddy ground after rain, narrow unpaved and grassy sections beyond the observatory, and some steep western cliff slopes. The ridge is exposed to strong wind and sea fog, so carry layers even in the flower season. There is no on-trail accommodation or resupply; base yourself near Kafuka and check ferry and local bus times.
