The Pieniny Dunajec River Trail is an easy 7.8 km point-to-point walk in Slovakia, following the Slovak bank of the Dunajec Gorge in Pieniny National Park. It runs from Červený Kláštor to Lesnica and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours one way. The compacted gravel path is almost flat, red-marked and largely barrier-free, so it suits families, pushchairs and hikers wanting limestone gorge scenery without a strenuous mountain day.
Route Overview
Start at Červený Kláštor, near the Red Monastery and the entrance to the Dunajec Gorge, then follow the red tourist waymarking downstream beside the river. The path doubles as the Náučný chodník Prielom Dunajca educational trail, with about 10 information stops on geology, ecosystems, forestry and local history. The route ends at Lesnica, by the mouth of the Lesnický potok. It is not a loop, so plan your return from Lesnica in advance. Traditional wooden raft trips from Červený Kláštor are a paid alternative way to experience the gorge. For steeper Slovak gorge walking, see the Kláštorská Gorge Trail; for bigger mountain objectives, compare the Kriváň Summit Trail or the Low Tatras Ridge Trail.
Red Monastery and the old Pieninská cesta
Červený Kláštor takes its name from the Red Monastery, founded in the early 14th century and later associated with Carthusian and Camaldolese monks. It is now a state museum and is linked to the legend of Brother Cyprián, an 18th-century herbalist and reputed flier. The red-marked riverside path follows the line of the historic Pieninská cesta, which connected Červený Kláštor with the Polish spa town of Szczawnica in the 19th century.
Notable highlights
- Dunajec Gorge (Prielom Dunajca): A roughly 9 km limestone gorge where the river twists through seven sharp meanders and forms part of the Slovak-Polish border. The white cliffs rise steeply above the path.
- Tri Koruny / Three Crowns (Trzy Korony): The crown-like limestone massif on the Polish side, with Okrąglica reaching 982 m. It is the dominant skyline feature seen from the gorge.
- Červený Kláštor (Red Monastery): An early-14th-century former Carthusian and later Camaldolese monastery at the trailhead. It is now a museum and a worthwhile add-on before or after the walk.
- Jánošík's Jump (Skok Janošíka): The narrowest point of the gorge, where the Dunajec narrows to about 10 m and reaches up to 12 m deep. It is tied to the legend of the outlaw Juraj Jánošík.
- Wooden raft trips (pltníctvo): Traditional flat wooden rafts descend the Dunajec from Červený Kláštor. They are a paid, long-standing local way to see the cliffs from the river.
- Educational nature trail: About 10 interpretive stops explain the gorge’s geology, flora, fauna and the history of Pieniny National Park, Slovakia’s smallest national park.
Challenges to expect
This is a low-difficulty walk: the path is almost flat, gravelled and clearly red-marked. The main planning issue is logistics, because it is point-to-point rather than a loop. Allow extra time for the Red Monastery, educational panels or a raft trip. Spring to autumn is the best season; outside the warmer months, associated raft services may not operate.
