The Kastoria Lakeside Trail is an easy 8 km paved loop around the Kastoria peninsula on Lake Orestiada in West Macedonia, northern Greece. It is a half-day walk, typically taking about 2 to 2.5 hours, and suits casual walkers, families and hikers wanting a low-effort day on foot. The route follows the waterfront, reed beds and plane-tree shade, with short cobbled sections through Kastoria’s old town rather than remote mountain terrain.

Route Overview

Most walkers start on Kastoria’s Megalou Alexandrou waterfront and follow the lakeside road and promenade around the peninsula, returning to the town centre. The loop can also be started from Panagia Mavriotissa monastery on the eastern shore. Key stops include the monastery, Dragon’s Cave, old Byzantine churches, fur-merchant mansions and reed-fringed wetland viewpoints over Lake Orestiada. No point-to-point transport is needed for the standard loop. This is a local day walk, not a GR or E-route; for longer Greek hiking, compare it with the E4 Greek section or the E6 Greek section.

Byzantine Kastoria and the Lake Orestiada Shore

Kastoria is an old Byzantine lake town known for its surviving churches, Ottoman-era mansions and long association with the fur trade. The Panagia Mavriotissa monastery was founded in 1082 during the reign of Alexios I Komnenos and preserves rare 12th- to 13th-century frescoes, including exterior portraits of Byzantine emperors. South of the town, Dispilio is a Neolithic lake-dwelling site where the Dispilio Tablet, one of Europe’s oldest known inscribed objects, was found in 1992.

Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery (1082): An 11th-century Byzantine monastery on the eastern lakeshore, notable for rare exterior frescoes depicting Byzantine emperors.
Dragon’s Cave / Spilaio tou Drakou: A lakeside show cave with stalactites, stalagmites and small underground lakes. Entry is ticketed and guided, so check opening times separately.
Kastoria old town mansions and churches: Cobbled lanes pass Byzantine churches such as Agios Nikolaos and grand 18th- to 19th-century fur-merchant mansions, including Papaterpou.
Lake Orestiada wetland: The Natura 2000 lake edge supports Dalmatian pelicans, mute swans, herons and extensive reed beds visible from the path.
Dispilio prehistoric lake settlement: A reconstructed Neolithic lake-dwelling village on the south shore, linked to the Dispilio Tablet found there in 1992.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy walk, but it is still exposed to seasonal weather: spring and autumn are most comfortable, while winter can bring freezing conditions on Lake Orestiada. Navigation is straightforward on the paved waterfront, though cobbled old-town lanes add short uneven sections. The Dragon’s Cave variant may feel longer than the core promenade. Carry water, as this is a town-based walk rather than a hut-to-hut trail like the Agrafa Mountains Circuit.
