The Cape Clear Island Loop is an approx 8 km one-day circuit on Cape Clear Island, the southernmost inhabited island of Ireland, off West Cork in Roaringwater Bay. It combines the island’s two official waymarked loops from North Harbour, crossing coastal cliffs, minor roads, green tracks and the Cnoicíns. Allow around 3–4 hours of walking, or a half to full day with ferry timings and stops. Overall difficulty is moderate, but the Gleann Loop is graded Strenuous and has steeper, more exposed sections.

Route Overview

Both official loops start and finish at the North Harbour Tourist Office/Craft Shop mapboard, near the ferry pier. The combined circuit links the Cnoicín’s Loop, which climbs by roadway towards South Harbour viewpoints and returns via an old Mass Path across the little hills, with the Gleann Loop through An Gleann and the Cnoicíns, including steeper coastal ground. Cape Clear is reached by ferry from Baltimore year-round, taking about 45 minutes, or from Schull in summer. The route is a loop, so there is no end-to-end transport problem. If Cape Clear makes you want more Irish island walking, compare the Aran Islands Loop Trails and Inishbofin Loop Trails.

O’Driscoll Stronghold and Island Heritage

Cape Clear’s history is tied to seafaring, Irish language and the O’Driscoll clan, who controlled this part of the West Cork coast for centuries. Their power centred on Dún an Óir, used to levy ships in Roaringwater Bay until their defeat in the early 1600s around the time of the Battle of Kinsale. The island had more than 1,000 residents before the Great Famine of the 1840s; the 2022 census recorded roughly 110. Cape Clear later became a major ornithological site after the bird observatory was founded in 1959.

Notable highlights

Dún an Óir: This ruined 16th-century O’Driscoll tower house stands on a near-detached rocky pinnacle on the island’s northwest side. It is a dramatic photo stop and a visible reminder of the clan’s control of shipping in Roaringwater Bay.

Cape Clear Bird Observatory: Founded in 1959, this is Ireland’s only bird observatory and a major seawatching site. Autumn is especially important for migration and seabird passage.

South Harbour and North Harbour: North Harbour is the sheltered ferry harbour and walk start; South Harbour faces the open Atlantic. The narrow isthmus known as “the Waist” almost splits Cape Clear in two.

Fastnet Rock views: From the southern cliffs there are views towards Fastnet Rock and its lighthouse, known as “Ireland’s Teardrop”, as well as the West Cork coast and Roaringwater Bay islands.

St Ciarán heritage: St Ciarán of Cape Clear is traditionally associated with the island. Early-Christian remains include Cill Leire, a 12th-century church near the North Harbour pier.

Gaeltacht island life: Cléire is a living Gaeltacht where Irish is spoken daily. The island also hosts Irish-language summer colleges and the Cape Clear International Storytelling Festival each September.

Challenges to expect

Expect short but uneven island walking rather than a long-distance trek. The route uses surfaced roads, coastal and cliff paths, green tracks and an old Mass Path, with muddy sections especially on the Gleann Loop. The cliffs can be exposed and windy, and Atlantic weather changes quickly, so boots and rainwear are sensible. Plan around ferry times. Dogs are allowed on Cnoicín’s Loop but not on the Gleann Loop.
