The Ylläs Winter Trail is a waymarked low-level winter route in Finnish Lapland, linking Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi in the Ylläs area of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Plan on about 14 km, 1 day and moderate effort: the challenge is winter distance, cold and snow conditions rather than steep climbing. It suits hikers wanting a signed snowshoe or winter-walking day between two resort villages, with forest, frozen lakes and views of Ylläs fell. See more walking in Finland.

Route Overview

This is a point-to-point winter trail between Äkäslompolo, on the north side of Ylläs fell, and Ylläsjärvi, on the south side. It can be walked in either direction. The route stays in low forest and lakeside terrain around the side of Yllästunturi, rather than climbing to the 719 m summit. Expect packed or groomed snow where maintained, with snowshoes or traction useful depending on conditions. Because the finish is in a different village, plan your return in advance; the two villages are linked by road around the fell. Ylläs: villages, winter tourism and reindeer country

Äkäslompolo’s first permanent settlement dates to about 1740, while both Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi began hosting visitors in residents’ homes in the 1930s. Shops and purpose-built accommodation followed from the late 1940s to the 1960s as winter tourism expanded. The Ylläs area is also part of the historic lands of the Sami, and reindeer herding remains part of local life; free-roaming reindeer are a common sight around the trails.

Notable highlights

Ylläs / Yllästunturi fell (719 m): The fell dominates the skyline above the route and rises well above the surrounding forest. This trail does not cross the summit; separate fell routes and lift access serve the higher ground.
Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi villages: These resort villages are the practical start and finish points, with accommodation, services and equipment rental nearby.
Snow-laden boreal forest: The trail passes through pine and spruce forest, often carrying heavy crown snow in mid-winter.
Frozen lakes: Open lake and waterway sections break up the forest walking and give brighter views across the winter landscape.
Northern Lights potential: Clear, dark winter nights away from village lights can bring aurora sightings.
Free-roaming reindeer: Semi-domesticated reindeer are often seen near the Ylläs trail network, so give animals space and avoid disturbing them.

Challenges to expect

This is a low-level route, but it is still a serious winter day. Expect sub-zero temperatures, possible wind chill, very short daylight in December and January, and snow that may be icy, soft or drifted. Markers can be harder to follow if snow-covered or visibility drops. Carry warm layers, headtorch, map/GPS, traction or snowshoes, and check current trail and weather conditions before leaving.
