The Nuuksio National Park Trail is an 8 km moderate loop in the Espoo highlands, less than 30 km north-west of Helsinki. This listing represents the yellow-marked Korpinkierros, or “Raven’s Tour”, from Haukkalampi, a day walk through boreal forest, rocky outcrops, wetlands and small lakes. It suits hikers wanting a real national-park feel without a long transfer from the capital. For an easier option, the nearby blue-marked Haukankierros is a shorter 4 km loop. Route Overview
Start and finish at the Haukkalampi visitor area, also known as Haukanpesa or “Hawk’s Nest”, the main trail hub in Nuuksio National Park. The Korpinkierros loop is yellow-marked and passes Mustalampi, Holma-Saarijarvi, the Siikaranta/Siikaniemi area and Kolmoislampi camping ground before returning to Haukkalampi. An alternative start is Siikaniemi. Access is straightforward from Helsinki: take a commuter train to Espoo, then bus 245A towards Nuuksionpaa/Haukkalampi, or drive in about 40 minutes. If you want a gentler urban comparison, look at the Helsinki Central Park Trail; for longer Finnish national-park walking, compare Oulanka National Park Trail or Linnansaari National Park Trail.
Nuuksio National Park history
Nuuksio National Park was established on 1 March 1994 to protect the lake-studded forest highlands beside the Helsinki metropolitan area. It was formed mainly from the former Tervalampi manor forest, previously a state hiking area, together with the Nuuksionpaa outdoor area and part of the Salmi recreation area, both bought by the City of Helsinki in the 1960s. The park covers about 53 km2 across Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti.
Notable highlights
- Lake Haukkalampi and the Hawk’s Nest hub: Haukkalampi is the main gateway for the blue and yellow circle trails, with a nature hut, information point and trailhead maps. The lake also anchors the shorter Haukankierros circuit.
- Mustalampi and its floating turf rafts: This dark forest lake on Korpinkierros is known for floating mats of turf. Its shore has campfire and camping sites, making it a useful mid-walk rest or swim stop.
- Siberian flying squirrel country: The Siberian flying squirrel is Nuuksio’s emblem, and the park has one of Finland’s densest recorded populations. It is nocturnal and rarely seen, but its habitat is a key reason for protecting the old-growth forest.
- Ice-age rocky outcrops and ravines: Exposed lichen-covered granite, rugged hills and steep-sided valleys shape the route. These sections give the walk its rougher footing, short climbs and stepped pitches.
- Finnish Nature Centre Haltia: Haltia sits by Lake Pitkajarvi at the edge of the park. Opened in 2013, it has exhibitions on Finland’s national parks plus visitor services including food and sauna facilities.
Challenges to expect
Expect short but steep climbs, stairways and uneven rocky ground rather than sustained altitude. Granite slabs can be slippery when wet, and duckboards cross boggy sections. Korpinkierros is the more demanding Haukkalampi loop; Haukankierros is shorter and easier. Navigation is helped by coloured diamond markers, but carry a map from the trailhead. In winter, the same area is used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
