The Helsinki Central Park Trail is an easy 10 km point-to-point walk through Keskuspuisto, the green corridor running south to north through Helsinki in Finland. It suits families, first-time hikers and anyone wanting a half-day urban forest route with simple logistics. Expect flat to gently undulating paths, mixed forest, fields and river scenery, with an end-to-end traverse taking about 2.5–3.5 hours.

Route Overview

Walk south to north from Toolonlahti bay / Laakso near Helsinki city centre, often starting by the Olympic Stadium in Töölö, to Haltiala and the Vantaanjoki on the northern city border. The route passes or links with Ruskeasuo, Maunula, Pirkkola sports park, Paloheinä, Pitkäkoski rapids, Haltiala primeval forest, Niskala arboretum and Haltiala farm. This is a point-to-point urban trail, but buses, trams and metro links make it easy to join or leave at several points. How Helsinki Central Park Became a Green Corridor

The idea of a continuous green wedge reaching into central Helsinki comes from architect Bertel Jung’s 1911 park plan. Helsinki Central Park was established in 1914 and extended north to the Vantaa River in 1934, creating the south–north corridor walked today. Systematic forest management began in 1952, and the area is now a long-established recreation landscape with over two million outdoor visits each year.

Notable highlights

Haltiala primeval forest: Helsinki’s largest legally protected forest, with old-growth spruce and a designated primeval-forest nature reserve at the northern end of the park.
Niskala arboretum: A small collection of exotic trees first planted in 1905 by agronomist Jakob Kavaleff; it is one of the park’s four nature reserves.
Pitkäkoski rapids: The longest natural rapids in the lower Vantaanjoki, with conifer groves and a footbridge making it a strong northern highlight.
Haltiala farm: A working city farm in open agricultural countryside, with grazing cattle helping manage the meadows and a café for an easy finish.
Maunula nature trail and Maunula House: A 3 km nature trail and community/nature house, useful for a shorter interpretive walk near the southern half of the corridor.
Four nature reserves: The corridor protects Pitkäkoski and Ruutinkoski deciduous-forest groves, Haltiala primeval forest and Niskala arboretum.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy, low-level urban forest walk, not a wilderness route. The main challenges are choosing the right branch among many paths, shared-use sections with cyclists or skiers, and winter conditions when routes may be groomed for cross-country skiing. Surfaces vary between gravel, packed earth and paved sections. There is no on-trail accommodation, but Helsinki transport access is frequent.
