Route Overview
This is a loop, not a point-to-point trail, so most walkers start and finish in Skenfrith on the River Monnow. The circuit links the three Norman castles of Monmouthshire: Skenfrith, Grosmont and White Castle, passing quiet villages and hamlets including Grosmont, Llanvetherine and Llangattock Lingoed. The main height gain comes on undulating wooded hillsides and the climb over Graig Syfyrddin / Edmunds Tump, the route high point. White Castle sits on the Offa’s Dyke Path, while Skenfrith and Grosmont link with the Monnow Valley Walk. The loop format makes Skenfrith the simplest base. For a longer day in the same border hills, the upland Beacons Way runs west across the nearby Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons.
The Norman Three Castles of Monmouthshire
Skenfrith, Grosmont and White Castle are the historic “Three Castles” of Monmouthshire: Norman fortresses in the Monnow valley, first raised in earth and timber soon after the Conquest and rebuilt in stone in the 12th–13th centuries. They were administered as a single lordship to control the Welsh Marches and border trade routes, and were held for a time by Hubert de Burgh. Their military role later declined, and the ruins are now cared for by Cadw.
