The Strandzha Eco-Trail is best treated as a network of marked eco-paths in Strandzha Nature Park, south-east Bulgaria, rather than one official long-distance route. This guide focuses on the best-supported representative walk: the 11.8 km point-to-point “Way of the Clear Moon” eco-trail from Brashlyan to Stoilovo. It is an easy one-day forest hike on dirt roads, gravel tracks and short path sections, suited to walkers who want low hills, old-growth woodland, village heritage and quiet nature-park terrain.

Route Overview

The representative route starts in Brashlyan, an architectural-reserve village in Malko Tarnovo municipality, and finishes in Stoilovo, with Dokuzak waterfall nearby as an easy add-on. From Brashlyan the trail heads into low, wooded Strandzha hills; about 1 km out there is a fountain and shelter, and roughly 2 km further the route forks, with a pedestrian variant passing St George chapel. The line is point-to-point, so plan return transport or a lift between villages. Strandzha History and the “Clear Moon” Route

Strandzha is strongly associated with ancient Thracian culture, local village traditions and the 1903 Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising against Ottoman rule. Brashlyan, formerly Sarmashik, developed from a 17th-century settlement into a 19th-century animal-husbandry centre and is now protected as an architectural reserve. The Brashlyan–Stoilovo eco-trail takes its name from the Strandzha anthem “A Clear Moon Is Now Rising”, linked to the uprising and the region’s freedom-struggle history.

Brashlyan architectural reserve: A whole-village heritage reserve of traditional Strandzha wooden houses, with the Church of St Dimitar standing on the site of an ancient Thracian sanctuary.
Old-growth oak and Oriental-beech forest: The walk passes through Strandzha’s relict Colchic/Pontic woodland, with evergreen laurel and Rhododendron ponticum understorey.
“Way of the Clear Moon” name: The route is named after the Strandzha anthem “A Clear Moon Is Now Rising”, tying the walk to the 1903 Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising.
St George chapel: The pedestrian variant passes this small chapel in the forested hills between Brashlyan and Stoilovo.

Challenges to expect

The physical walking is easy, but navigation is the main issue. Strandzha is low and densely forested, with few open viewpoints, and waymarking can be sparse in places. Carry offline mapping or GPS and do not rely only on signs. Summer can be warm, though the forest gives shade. There is no on-route hut system, so base yourself in village guesthouses or nearby towns.
