There is no single official long-distance “Kiskunság National Park Trail”. Kiskunság National Park in Hungary is a set of seven separate protected units on the Danube–Tisza Interfluve, so walking is on short marked study trails. The best representative hike is the Bugac Yellow Trail, an easy 11.7 km loop taking about 2.5–3 hours. Expect flat puszta grassland, loose sand, juniper-poplar groves and exposed Great Plain walking, suited to families and day hikers.

Route Overview

The main walking base is Bugac, the park’s largest unit. Walks usually start near the Karikás Csárda and the Shepherd Museum, reached by a roughly 1.5 km dirt road; the Bugac Yellow Trail loops back to the same area. There is no waymarked route linking Bugac with Lake Kolon, Fülöpháza or the Felső-Kiskunság lakes, which are separate park units with their own short trails and hides. Lake Kolon’s study trail starts at the sporting area in Izsák, while Fülöpháza has an 8 km dune study trail. Kiskunság, Cumans and the Puszta Pastoral Landscape

Kiskunság National Park was established on 1 January 1975 as Hungary’s second national park to protect sand dunes, sodic lakes, marshes and saline puszta on the Great Hungarian Plain. It later became a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The name Kiskunság, or “Little Cumania”, refers to the medieval Cuman people who herded these plains. Centuries of grazing shaped the open puszta, and Bugac preserves that pastoral culture through the Shepherd Museum and herder programmes with traditional livestock breeds.

Notable highlights

Bugac puszta and sand dunes: The flagship walking area and the park’s largest unit, with open sand-steppe grassland over wind-formed dunes. May is highlighted by the park for peak dune flower cover.
Shepherd Museum, Bugac: A circular museum of Great Plain pastoral life, opened in 1975 and now a listed architectural monument. It is the usual trailhead area for Bugac walks.
Bugac horse show and csikós herders: Seasonal displays run from 1 May to 30 September, showing the riding culture of Hungary’s horsemen of the plain. Indigenous breeds such as Hungarian Grey Cattle, Racka sheep and mangalica pigs are kept here.
Juniper-poplar groves: These woodland pockets survive in damper dune slacks around Bugac. They add shade, habitat variety and wildlife interest to the otherwise open sand country.
Lake Kolon, Izsák: A separate reed-fringed marsh unit with its own short study trail to a bird hide. It is an Important Bird Area, with electric-boat trips available as a paid extra.
Fülöpháza sand dunes: A separate park unit with one of Hungary’s remaining areas of moving sand dunes. Its 8 km study trail crosses pioneer sand-steppe vegetation.

Challenges to expect

The walking is flat and low-altitude, but not effortless: loose sand slows progress on the dunes, and the open puszta gives little shade. Summer can be hot and exposed; late spring and autumn are more comfortable. Navigation is by individual marked study trails, not a continuous park route, so check which separate unit you are visiting before travel. There are no huts or wild-camping options inside the protected park.
