Černá Hora to Pec pod Sněžkou is an 11.5 km, one-day, easy point-to-point walk in the Krkonoše / Giant Mountains of Czechia. It suits hikers who want a short mountain route with cable-car access, broad ridge walking, huts en route and a mostly downhill finish into Pec pod Sněžkou. The standard trip starts from the Černohorský Express upper station above Janské Lázně and can include the Černohorské rašeliniště peat-bog boardwalk.
Route Overview
Ride the Černohorský Express gondola from Janské Lázně to the Černá hora upper station, then walk north and east on KČT colour-blazed trails. The route passes the Panorama lookout tower, Hotel Černá bouda, Rozcestí Václavák and, if open, the Černohorské rašeliniště nature-trail loop. It then continues via Kolínská bouda, Pražská bouda, Lučiny, Lesní bouda and Rozcestí Zelený potok before descending through forest to Pec pod Sněžkou. This is a point-to-point walk, so plan the bus or combined cable-car and Černohorský microbus ticket for the return. For bigger Krkonoše objectives, compare the Krkonoše Traverse and the Elbe River Source Trail.
Černá hora Cable Cars, Boudy and KRNAP
Černá hora has been shaped by mountain transport and tourism infrastructure for nearly a century. A cable car ran here from 1928 to 1981, while the modern Černohorský Express gondola has operated since 2006. The Panorama lookout tower was built in 1998 on a surviving old cable-car pylon, and the summit also carries a TV/radio transmitter installed in 1978. The route lies inside Krkonoše National Park, established in 1963, and the traditional boudy reflect the range’s highland herding and mountain-tourism culture.
Notable highlights
- Černohorské rašeliniště peat bog: The largest raised bog in the Krkonoše, with a wooden boardwalk and small view tower on a 3.5 km nature trail. It is closed every year from 15 March to 31 May to protect breeding wildlife.
- Panorama lookout tower: A 21 m steel tower on Černá hora, built on an old cable-car pylon, with a platform at 1289 m. On clear days it gives wide views towards the Jeseníky, Orlické hory, Czech Paradise and Poland.
- Sněžka views: Open sections of ridge and bog edge give views towards Sněžka, the Czech Republic’s highest peak at 1603 m. Pec pod Sněžkou sits below it at the end of the walk.
- Mountain huts — Černá, Kolínská, Pražská and Lesní bouda: These traditional Krkonoše boudy provide useful food, drink and shelter stops along a short day route.
- Pec pod Sněžkou: The finish is a mountain resort village in the Úpa valley and a main base for routes towards Sněžka via the Obří důl valley.
- Janské Lázně and the Černohorský Express: The gondola access from this historic spa town removes most of the climbing and makes the walk practical as a half- to full-day outing.
Challenges to expect
The walk is graded easy, but it is still a mountain route in Krkonoše National Park. Expect changeable weather, exposed plateau sections and a steeper, sometimes eroded forest descent into Pec. Navigation is straightforward on KČT red, yellow and blue blazes, but check junctions carefully. The peat-bog loop is unavailable from 15 March to 31 May. For rougher Czech mountain terrain, see the Bílá Opava Valley Path.
