Beglik Tash to Primorsko is a short, easy coastal walk on the southern Black Sea coast in Bulgaria. It covers about 5 km one way between Primorsko North Beach and the prehistoric Thracian rock sanctuary of Beglik Tash, usually taking 1–1.5 hours each way. This is a half-day approach walk rather than a long-distance trail: expect quiet coastal forest, mostly paved and gravel surfaces, minimal ascent, and time to explore the open-air archaeological site.

Route Overview

Start at Primorsko North Beach and follow the approach north towards the former Perla residence, then continue on the rough gravel and forest road towards Beglik Tash. The final section reaches the sanctuary barrier and a short prepared forest path into the megalithic site near the Ropotamo reserve forest. The route is point-to-point, so plan your return to Primorsko before setting off; no transport service is verified in the brief. From Beglik Tash, onward eco-paths continue towards Cape Maslen Nos and St Paraskeva Bay, but these are separate extensions. Beglik Tash: Thracian Sanctuary History

Beglik Tash is a prehistoric megalithic rock sanctuary covering about 6 hectares. It was created in the middle of the 2nd millennium BC and used for over a millennium, from around the 14th century BC to roughly the 4th century AD. The site is linked with the cult of the Mother Goddess, fertility and Orphic beliefs. First noted by historian Karel Skorpil in the late 19th century, it was excavated in 2002–2003 under archaeologist Tsonia Drazheva.

Notable highlights

Beglik Tash sanctuary: A prehistoric Thracian megalithic complex of carved and balanced rocks. It is the destination of the walk and an important open-air archaeological site on Bulgaria’s south-east Black Sea coast.
The labyrinth: Remains of a stone labyrinth within the sanctuary that visitors can still walk through. It is thought to have had a ritual purpose.
Thracian sun-clock: A stone sundial or solar observatory used to track the sun and time sunrise rituals. It gives the site much of its archaeological interest.
Womb-cave and balanced rock: A womb-cave with a stone altar linked to fertility cult practice, plus a roughly 150-ton megalith balanced on only two points.
Ropotamo reserve forest: The approach passes through quiet coastal woodland near the Ropotamo reserve, with deer and protected plants such as butcher’s broom.
Primorsko: The trailhead town is a busy southern Black Sea resort with long sandy beaches, hotels and guesthouses.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy walk, but it is not entirely urban pavement: after the asphalt section from North Beach, expect rough gravel and forest road underfoot. Summer on the Black Sea coast can be warm and busy, especially around Primorsko and the beaches. Navigation is straightforward on the main approach, but onward paths to Cape Maslen Nos and St Paraskeva Bay are separate extensions.
