The Curmătura Hut Loop is a classic 12 km moderate day hike in Piatra Craiului National Park, near Zărnești in Brașov County, Romania. The loop climbs through the limestone Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor, reaches Cabana Curmătura at 1,470 m, then returns through forest and meadow to the valley. With around 690 m of ascent, it suits fit day hikers who want the park’s best-known walk without committing to the harder Piatra Craiului ridge routes.

Route Overview

Start and finish near Zărnești, most commonly at Fântâna lui Botorog, the spring trailhead about 3.5 km from the town centre where the gorge road begins. The usual circuit climbs via the red-stripe route through Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor, then continues through forest and Poiana Curmăturii to Cabana Curmătura and Șaua Curmăturii. The descent returns by a different marked path, often via Poiana Zănoagă, making this a true loop rather than an out-and-back. There is a paid car park at the gorge trailhead. For bigger Romanian mountain days, compare the Bucegi Plateau Circuit or the longer Carpathian Ridge Trail.

Piatra Craiului and the Curmătura Hut Route

Cabana Curmătura is a long-established mountain hut at the junction of the main trails in Piatra Craiului. The approach through Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor is described as the oldest and most popular walk in the area. Piatra Craiului, meaning “the King’s Rock”, was protected as a nature reserve from the 1930s and became a national park in 1990, recognised for its limestone ridge, large carnivore populations and endemic flora such as the Piatra Craiului pink.

Notable highlights

  • Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor (Zărnești Gorge): A narrow limestone canyon with sheer white walls, followed on the climb towards the hut. It is the park’s signature gorge walk and is also popular with mountain bikers.
  • Cabana Curmătura (1,470 m): A rustic mountain hut in Poiana Curmăturii, below the saddle between Piatra Mică and Turnul Pietrei Mari. It is the natural lunch stop and a crossroads for Piatra Craiului routes.
  • Piatra Craiului limestone crest: The white Jurassic limestone ridge rises above the hut in towers and steep chutes. The karst rock holds no water, so carry enough if continuing higher.
  • Piatra Mică (1,816 m): An optional steeper add-on above the hut, reached by a chained path. It makes the day harder and is not part of the standard moderate loop.
  • Brown bears and chamois: Piatra Craiului holds brown bears, while chamois live on the higher rocks. Sightings are possible but never guaranteed.
  • Dianthus callizonus: The Piatra Craiului pink is endemic to this massif and flowers on the limestone in summer.

Challenges to expect

Expect a moderate mountain day with about 690 m of ascent, rocky sections, forest paths and a gravel track through the gorge. The route is well marked, but junctions use several Romanian colour markings, so check signs carefully. Carry water: the limestone ridge above is porous and waterless. In winter the gorge can be icy and higher ground needs alpine equipment. The Piatra Mică variant is harder, with fixed chains.
