Route Overview

The circuit starts and finishes at 5 rue de la mairie in the village centre of Chouzé-sur-Loire. It is a loop, not a point-to-point route, using a mix of asphalt through the village and quays, then earth and dirt tracks along the Loire shore and towpath-style riverside sections. Key points include the former mariniers’ houses, the village quays, the Loire riverbank and the Musée des Mariniers. The route sits in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park and within the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley. Loire Boatmen Heritage at Chouzé-sur-Loire

Chouzé-sur-Loire developed as a busy Loire river port, home to mariniers, fishermen, basket-makers and millers. At its peak it was the leading river port between Nantes and Orléans, with links by canal towards Paris and Marseille. River traffic declined after the arrival of the railways in the 19th century. Today, the Musée des Mariniers, the village quays and restored toue cabanée boats keep that river-trade history visible along the walking route.

The riverside section can flood during high water; in that case, stick to the village loop. Expect mixed surfaces: asphalt on streets and quays, plus dirt tracks beside the Loire. Navigation should be straightforward on the waymarked local circuit, but check conditions before setting out.
