The Seitseminen National Park Trail is a 19 km easy loop in Pirkanmaa, southern Finland, roughly 50 km north-west of Tampere. The headline route is the Seitakierros circuit: a long day hike through boreal old-growth forest, sandy esker ridges and extensive bog crossed on duckboards. It suits hikers who want a quiet, waymarked national park walk without major climbs, though the full loop is still a proper day out. Shorter loops and the longer Virkatie ring also use the park’s marked trail network.

Route Overview

The Seitakierros is a loop starting and finishing near the Seitseminen Nature Centre (Luontokeskus) / Multiharju car park area, with access also possible from the Kovero heritage farm parking. Expect marked forest paths, sandy or gravelly esker sections on Seitsemisharju, and long wooden duckboards over mires such as Soljanen / Soljastensuo. Multiharju old-growth forest and Kovero crown tenant farm are the key stops on or near the wider route network. Public transport details are not verified here, so plan around the named car parks and nature centre. Forest protection, tenant farming and national park status

Seitseminen’s landscape was shaped by logging and farming before protection. Kovero farm began as a crown tenant farm in 1859 and is maintained as a living heritage site, with traditional fields and meadows still managed. Multiharju old-growth forest was protected in 1910, well before the wider park, and contains pines close to 400 years old. Seitseminen National Park was established in 1982, expanded in 1989, and received the Council of Europe’s European Diploma of Protected Areas in 1996.

Notable highlights

Multiharju old-growth forest (protected since 1910): One of the park’s core ancient forest areas, with gnarled old pines and abundant deadwood. It is a restricted conservation zone, so hikers must stay on marked paths.
Kovero heritage farm (former crown tenant farm): A preserved rural farm site with traditional log buildings, hayfields and grazing. It adds cultural context to an otherwise wild forest-and-bog walk.
Seitsemisharju esker (dry ridge walking): A north–south sand-and-gravel ridge left by retreating ice. Its pine-forest paths give firmer walking between wetter mire sections.
Mires and bog boardwalks (over half the park is mire): Long duckboards cross pine bogs, spruce swamps and open fen. These wetlands are good places to watch for cranes, whooper swans and other mire birds.
Seitseminen Nature Centre (Luontokeskus): The main visitor hub and practical trailhead, with information, exhibitions and toilets before or after the loop.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty is mainly distance, not climbing: the 19 km loop is long for an easy-grade day walk. Duckboards can be slippery when wet, and bog sections are exposed to rain and wind. Stay on marked trails in Multiharju’s restricted conservation zone. There are free campfire sites, lean-tos and tent areas, but no paid mountain huts on the loop.
