The Pezinská Baba Ridge Trail is an 18 km, point-to-point ridge day hike in the Little Carpathians of western Slovakia. Starting at the Pezinská Baba pass above Pezinok, it follows the red-marked crest north over forested limestone hills, including Vysoká at 754 m, toward Smolenice. Expect a moderate full day: good waymarked paths and tracks, repeated ups and downs, and no technical scrambling on the through-route. It suits fit hikers wanting a compact Carpathian ridge walk close to Bratislava and wine-country towns.

Route Overview

Start at Pezinská Baba pass, a 527 m road saddle and major trail junction reached by road or by train to Pezinok then bus. The natural northbound section follows the main red-marked Little Carpathians crest, shared here with the E8 and the Cesta Hrdinov SNP, through mixed forest and over Vysoká before continuing by Záruby and the Ostrý Kameň castle ruins area toward Smolenice and Smolenický zámok. This is a linear ridge section rather than a branded standalone trail, so plan onward transport from Smolenice or another village trailhead. For a shorter Bratislava-area outing on the same range, compare the Devín Castle to Bratislava Trail.

History on the Little Carpathian Crest

The Little Carpathian ridge carries the red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP, the Path of the Heroes of the Slovak National Uprising, which commemorates the 1944 uprising. It also forms part of the pan-European E8 long-distance path. Around the walking route, the Small Carpathian wine country of Pezinok and Modra, plus medieval castles such as Červený Kameň, Ostrý Kameň and Smolenice, give the ridge more cultural context than a typical forest day hike.

Notable highlights

  • Pezinská Baba pass (527 m): A busy Little Carpathians saddle and trail crossroads above Pezinok. It is also a year-round outdoor hub, with ski, mountain-bike and chalet facilities nearby.
  • Vysoká (754 m): The route’s listed high point and one of the best-known viewpoints in the range. Rocky limestone breaks through the trees here, with wide views in clear weather.
  • Záruby (768 m): The highest summit of the Little Carpathians lies on this northern ridge sector. The forested top and nearby Ostrý Kameň castle ruins make it a key landmark on the way toward Smolenice.
  • Forested limestone ridge: Most of the day is sheltered walking through beech, oak and pine, with crags, screes and small karst features around Vysoká rather than open alpine terrain.
  • Wine towns and castles: Pezinok, Modra and Smolenice make useful start/end bases, and the wider area is known for the Small Carpathian wine route and medieval castles.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty is mainly distance and cumulative undulation, not technical terrain. The ridge rolls through forest on natural paths, tracks and some asphalt forest roads, with intermittent viewpoints and limited services between trailheads. Navigation is straightforward on marked paths, but junctions around Pezinská Baba are busy, so check the red-ridge direction carefully. In winter, snow changes the character of the route; the pass is also used for Nordic skiing.
