The Dubrovnik to Cavtat Coastal Trail is a point-to-point day walk in southern Croatia, running south-east from Dubrovnik towards Cavtat on the Konavle coast. Treat it as an approximately 18 km link-up rather than an official continuous trail: the full Dubrovnik–Cavtat route is moderate because of distance, heat and unavoidable D8 road sections, while the Mlini–Srebreno promenade and Cavtat waterfronts are easy. It suits hikers who want a coastal day out with flexible bus or boat exits.

Route Overview

Start in Dubrovnik Old Town or the Lapad peninsula and head south-east through Župa Dubrovačka towards Kupari, Srebreno, Mlini, Plat and Cavtat. The route is not a single waymarked path: you stitch together town pavements, beach promenades, low headland paths and sections near or on the D8 Adriatic Highway, where no footpath exists in places. The best continuous walking is around Mlini–Srebreno and on Cavtat’s peninsulas. Libertas buses 10/11/12 and seasonal boat lines make it easy to shorten the walk or return one-way. For a shorter Dubrovnik add-on, consider the Dubrovnik City Walls Trail; for broader coastal inspiration, see the Adriatic Long-Distance Trail.

History of the Dubrovnik–Cavtat Coast

Cavtat stands on the site of ancient Epidaurum, first Greek and then an important Roman colony, making it older than Dubrovnik. Refugees from Epidaurum’s destruction in the 6th–7th centuries are traditionally linked with the founding of Dubrovnik, later Ragusa. This coast belonged to the historic Republic of Ragusa. More recent history is visible at Kupari, where the ruined resort hotels remain a direct relic of the 1991–92 Homeland War and the siege and shelling of the Dubrovnik area.

Notable highlights

  • Dubrovnik Old Town: The UNESCO-listed walled city is the natural start point, with the Stradun, Fort Lovrijenac and medieval City Walls close at hand before you head south.
  • Kupari abandoned hotels: A cluster of damaged socialist-era resort hotels stands on the beach, left as concrete shells after being shelled and burned during the 1991–92 siege.
  • Mlini–Srebreno seafront promenade: The most genuinely scenic walkable stretch links the two villages on a paved waterfront path past beaches, pines and cafés in about 20–30 minutes.
  • Cavtat peninsulas: Cavtat’s twin pine-clad peninsulas are ringed by flat seaside promenades; the Cape to Cape loop is about 4.3 km and makes a strong finale.
  • Racic Family Mausoleum: This white-stone domed mausoleum by Ivan Meštrović sits in Cavtat’s hilltop St Roch cemetery, with wide views over the bay.
  • Konavle and Adriatic views: Cavtat is the gateway to rural Konavle, and the route gives frequent views across the Dubrovnik Riviera and Adriatic.

Challenges to expect

The main difficulty is not technical terrain but road walking, sun and navigation. This is not an official continuous trail, and the D8 is a busy single-carriageway road with no footpath in places and limited sea views. Summer heat can be severe, with exposed tarmac between settlements. Carry water, use buses or boats to skip poor sections, and prioritise the Mlini–Srebreno and Cavtat waterfront walks.
