The Isojärvi National Park Trail is a 20 km loop in Isojärvi National Park, Kuhmoinen, Central Finland, about an hour from Tampere. The full circuit combines Savottapolku and Jätkän polku for a long 8–10 hour day, or an easy overnight using huts and campsites. Expect a moderate but sometimes challenging walk: rocky forest paths, exposed roots, short climbs over ridges, wetlands and lakeshore sections. It suits hikers wanting a compact Lakeland route with wilderness feel and simple logistics in Finland.

Route Overview

Most hikers start from Heretty, where there is parking, a summer café, information point and services in the old loggers’ cabin. A second trailhead is at Kalalahti. The featured full circuit links the park’s two longer loops: Savottapolku / Forest-Work-Camp Trail and Vahterjärven kierros / Jätkän polku, continuing at Vahterjärvi on the red-triangle waymarks. The loop passes forest ridges, boggy sections with duckboards, Lortikka cabin, Hevosjärvi beaver dams, Kalalahti and the high point of Vahtervuori. If you want another Central Finland national park walk, compare it with the Leivonmäki National Park Trail or a lake-based route such as the Linnansaari National Park Trail.

Logging History in Isojärvi National Park

Isojärvi National Park was established in 1982 on former state logging grounds. Before protection, these forests were used for slash-and-burn cultivation, tar burning and timber work. The Heretty loggers’ cabin was built in winter 1946–47 to house horsemen; Lortikka housed loggers. Heretty was intended for about 26 men but held roughly 40 plus cooks at the late-1940s and 1950s peak. By the mid-1960s, machinery had replaced much manual logging. Today, as the park says, the only loggers here are beavers.

Notable highlights

Heretty: The main trailhead, with parking, a summer café, information point, restrooms and water in a protected 1946–47 loggers’ cabin. It is the practical base for the full loop and shorter nature trails.

Lake Isojärvi: The lake that gives the national park its name, with islands and lakeshore walking. It anchors the route in the Finnish Lakeland landscape.

Hevosjärvi beaver dams: Isojärvi’s emblem is the beaver, specifically Canadian/American beaver introduced to Finland in the 1930s. Dams around Hevosjärvi are one of the clearest signs of their activity.

Lortikka cabin: A restored former logging cabin on the longer trail network. It works as both a historical landmark and a useful overnight option if splitting the circuit.

Vahtervuori: The park’s high point at about 218 m. The climb is not alpine, but it forms part of the repeated short ascents that make the full loop tougher than its distance suggests.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty comes from rough underfoot conditions rather than altitude. Expect natural forest path, rock, exposed roots, wetland duckboards and repeated short climbs over eskers and ridges. The Lortikka–Vahterjärvi–Kalalahti section is described as challenging. In the snow-free season, stay on marked trails in the restricted Lortikanvuori and Latokuusikko zones. Carry what you need between Heretty, huts and campfire sites.
