The Wolin National Park Coastal Trail is a moderate, waymarked day-walk on Wolin island in West Pomerania, north-west Poland. The core red-marked coastal route is about 20 km and usually takes 5–6 hours, linking Międzyzdroje with Wisełka and onward towards Międzywodzie. It suits hikers wanting a full coastal day: high Baltic cliffs, sandy and rocky beach, beech forest, moraine hills, lakes and the Kikut lighthouse without committing to a multi-day trek.

Route Overview

This is a linear, point-to-point walk running north-east/east from Międzyzdroje, not west towards Wolin town. Follow the red-marked Dr Czesław Piskorski Seaside Trail through Wolin National Park, passing Kawcza Góra, the Gosań cliff area and forested moraine terrain towards Wisełka. The route then continues inland through forest near Kikut lighthouse and Koprowo Lake towards Międzywodzie or Kołczewo, depending on the chosen finish. Expect a mix of clifftop paths, beach sections, gravel forest roads and a short asphalt stretch. If you are comparing Baltic walking options, see the longer Baltic Coastal Trail, Poland’s sandy Hel Peninsula Trail, or the inland Drawa National Park Trail.

Wolin National Park and Island Heritage

Wolin National Park was established on 3 March 1960 and covers about 109.37 km². It is Poland’s only national park protecting both Baltic sea coast and forest, with old Pomeranian beechwoods, moraine hills, lakes and cliff coastline. The wider island of Wolin also has early-medieval Slavic and Viking-age heritage, especially around historic Wolin town and its annual Slavs and Vikings festival, though that town lies away from the coastal cliff trail.

Notable highlights

  • Gosań cliff (about 93–95 m): Poland’s tallest sea cliff, with a clifftop platform and wide Baltic views. The soft moraine face is actively eroding, so stay on marked paths and viewpoints.
  • Kawcza Góra viewpoint: A cliff lookout close to Międzyzdroje, reached from the beach by a long staircase. It gives one of the first major sea panoramas on the route.
  • Kikut lighthouse (about 91.5 m above sea level): A working lighthouse near Wisełka and a clear landmark on the forested section. It is described as the highest-sited lighthouse in Poland.
  • Turquoise Lake: A flooded former chalk quarry near Wapnica, known for its blue-green water. It is a worthwhile short detour rather than a guaranteed point on the main coastal line.
  • European bison reserve: A visitor enclosure just east of Międzyzdroje where you can see wisent, a species reintroduced to the park.
  • Beech and pine forest: Protected old-growth Pomeranian beechwoods and pine woodland crown the cliffs and cover the moraine hills, giving shade and a strong contrast to the open Baltic shore.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty is mainly length and surface, not altitude. Plan for 5–6 hours of walking, soft sand, rocky or boulder-strewn beach sections, clifftop staircases and undulating forest paths. The red route is waymarked, but on the open beach it is not always physically signed. Wolin National Park charges a small entry fee, and dogs are not permitted on park trails.
