The Hvar Island Ridge Trail is a hard full-day ridge walk on Hvar, the long Dalmatian island in Croatia. This listed version is roughly 20 km and takes about 5–7 hours, crossing the island’s mountainous spine to Sveti Nikola, Hvar’s highest point at 626 m. It suits fit hikers comfortable with rocky karst, heat exposure, limited shade and point-to-point logistics. It is a recognised, waymarked hiking objective, but not a single official branded long-distance trail.

Route Overview

The listed route starts around the Hvar Town outskirts or inland Dol area, climbs towards the central ridge and continues across the Poljica plateau area to the chapel-topped summit of Sveti Nikola. From there it descends north towards Stari Grad. Alternative approaches reach the summit from Sveta Nedjelja, Svirče, Dol, Jelsa or the Stari Grad–Hvar road, so distances vary widely. Treat this as a point-to-point traverse only if you arrange transport between trailheads; many hikers instead use out-and-back or loop options from a town base. Hvar, Pharos and the chapel of St Nicholas

Hvar has been settled since antiquity, including the Greek colony of Pharos at Stari Grad in 384 BC. On the summit, the Chapel of St Nicholas dates to the late 15th century and is linked to the island’s seafaring communities; St Nicholas is the patron of sailors. Local tradition also connects the chapel with Matija Ivanić, leader of the Hvar rebellion of 1510–1514. Sveti Nikola remains both a pilgrimage site and a Croatian mountaineering objective.

Notable highlights

Sveti Nikola summit (626 m): Hvar’s highest point and a recognised Croatian Mountaineering Association peak, with a summit logbook and stamp. It gives wide views across the central Dalmatian archipelago.
Chapel of St Nicholas: A small stone gabled chapel on the summit, recorded around the late 15th century. Its sailor-patron dedication and mountain-top position make it the route’s key cultural landmark.
Adriatic and island panoramas: On clear days, views extend towards Brač, Vis, Korčula, Šćedro, Sušac, the Pelješac peninsula and the Biokovo massif on the mainland.
Dalmatian black pine groves: Weather-shaped Dalmatian black pines grow on the higher ridge, adding rare shade and a distinctive upland feel above the dry coast.
Dry-stone heritage landscape: Terraces, walls, trims, abandoned olive groves and lavender terraces show how Hvar’s rocky slopes were worked before tourism dominated the island.

Challenges to expect

Expect a strenuous day despite the modest altitude. The route has steep climbs, rough limestone underfoot, exposed ridge sections and very limited shade or water. Summer heat is the main hazard; spring and autumn are far better. Navigation also needs care because “Hvar Island Ridge Trail” is not one fixed official line, and summit routes vary by trailhead.
