The Žiče Charterhouse Trail is a short heritage-and-nature walk in the wooded Valley of St John the Baptist near Slovenske Konjice, north-eastern Slovenia. The commonly listed route is about 7.5 km and fits into a half day, starting from Žiče Charterhouse car park. It is easy to moderate: gentle around the monastery and valley, with a steeper forest climb towards Trije Križi / Three Crosses. It suits walkers who want medieval ruins, quiet woodland and a simple day hike rather than a long-distance trail.

Route Overview

Start and finish at the Žiče Charterhouse car park, at about 410 m, reached via the Tepanje exit on the Maribor–Ljubljana motorway. The walk can be treated as an out-and-back or short circular route: explore the upper monastery ruins, herb garden and paths around the grounds, then follow marked forest paths uphill towards Trije Križi / Three Crosses at 727 m before returning. Valley links also lead towards Špitalič, the lower monastic house and the Gastuž inn. Stronger walkers can continue on the marked out-and-back route to Stolpnik, but that is a longer option. For other Slovenian heritage walking, compare the Idrija Mercury Trail; for a riverside multi-day option see the Drava River Trail, or follow the long-distance European Long-Distance Path E7 across the wider region.

History of Žiče Charterhouse

Žiče Charterhouse was founded between about 1155 and 1165 by Ottokar III of Styria and his son Ottokar IV. It was the first Carthusian monastery outside France and Italy, with an upper house at Žiče for enclosed monks and a lower house at Špitalič for lay brothers and hospitality. Its library once held more than 2,000 manuscript volumes. During the Western Schism, Žiče priors led the Carthusian order. The monastery declined after an Ottoman raid in 1531 and was abolished in 1782 under Joseph II.

Notable highlights

  • Žiče Charterhouse ruins (upper monastery): Gothic ruins of the Domus Superior, including the church, Great Cloister and monks’ cells. This is the oldest Carthusian monastery in Central Europe and the main reason to walk here.
  • Valley of St John the Baptist: A quiet enclosed side valley chosen by the Carthusians for solitude. The approach gives the walk its sheltered, green character.
  • Gastuž inn (beside the monastery): A historic inn linked to the charterhouse hospitality tradition. It reportedly dates to 1467 and is a practical stop for food or drinks.
  • Trije Križi / Three Crosses (727 m): A wooded waypoint above the charterhouse where marked paths meet. It is the natural turnaround for the shorter hill walk.
  • Stolpnik summit (1,012 m): The highest peak of Konjiška gora, reached only if you extend the walk. The longer out-and-back gains about 602 m and reaches a 25 m lookout tower.
  • Špitalič lower house: The former Domus Inferior for lay brothers, with a Romanesque-Gothic church. It adds context to the working and charitable side of Carthusian life.

Challenges to expect

The main difficulty is route choice: there is no single canonical official trail distance, and local variants range from short monastery paths to the longer Stolpnik out-and-back. Around the grounds the walking is easy on asphalt, gravel and accessible paths. The climb to Three Crosses and towards Stolpnik is steeper on forest paths, which can be muddy or icy in winter. There is no permit, but entry to the charterhouse complex is paid.
