The Mount Vogel Loop is an 11.5 km day hike in the Julian Alps above Lake Bohinj, north-west Slovenia. Starting from the upper Vogel cable-car station at Rjava Skala, it makes a hard alpine loop over Orlova Glava, Šija and the Vogel summit before returning via Planina Zadnji Vogel. Allow about 5 hours walking, or 6–7 hours with summit stops. It suits fit hikers who are comfortable on rocky ridge paths, scree and short chained sections with exposure.

Route Overview

The route starts and finishes at the upper Vogel cable-car station, reached from the lower station near Ukanc on the western shore of Lake Bohinj. From Rjava Skala, the path crosses ski terrain, climbs over Orlova Glava, follows the ridge to Šija, continues to Vogel summit, then descends back via Planina Zadnji Vogel. The Orlova Glava chairlift may run seasonally and can save around 30 minutes of climbing. Rodica is a longer optional extension via the Vratca pass. For a bigger Julian Alps objective from the Bohinj side, compare the Bohinj to Triglav Trail; for another Slovenian mountain route, see the Kranjska Gora to Trenta Trail.

Vogel Ski Centre and Rjava Skala History

Skiing on Vogel developed between the wars, when enthusiasts built the Skalaški dom hut on Rjava Skala; it later burnt down during the Second World War. The modern resort began taking shape from 1958, and the Vogel cable car opened on 4 July 1964, lifting visitors roughly 1,000 m above Lake Bohinj to Rjava Skala. The early Šija and Orlove Glave chairlifts followed within two years. The peaks form part of the Lower Bohinj range inside Triglav National Park.

Notable highlights

  • Lake Bohinj panorama: The cable car and early ridge give a high view over Bohinjsko jezero, Slovenia’s largest permanent lake, with the Bohinj valley far below.
  • Vogel summit, 1,922 m: The highest point of the loop opens the view towards Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain, and the wider Julian Alps.
  • Chained ridge passages: Short secured sections with steel cables, chains and iron pegs add a mild scramble around Šija, the Vratca pass and the rockier approach to Vogel.
  • Rodica viewpoint option: The longer variant adds Rodica, whose summit has an engraved orientation plate and broad views in clear weather.
  • Vogel ski centre: The route crosses terrain linked to the Vogel ski centre, whose cable car has connected Lake Bohinj with Rjava Skala since 1964.

Challenges to expect

Expect a harder day than the modest distance suggests: about 750 m of ascent, rocky ridge paths, scree, dwarf pine and steep secured steps. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are needed on the chained sections. Snow can linger into early summer on the higher ridge. Carry enough water, as official advice notes no water sources in the lower Bohinj mountains; refreshments are at the cable-car station and nearby huts.
