The Pravčická Gate Circular Trail is a moderate day hike in Bohemian Switzerland National Park, Czechia. The compact loop from Hřensko is about 9 km, takes roughly 3–4 hours, and climbs through forest to Pravčická brána, Europe’s largest natural sandstone arch. Expect around 350 m of ascent, stone and wooden steps, and potentially slippery sandstone in wet weather. It suits hikers who want a short but scenic Elbe Sandstone Mountains walk with a major landmark as the goal.
Route Overview
The route starts and finishes in Hřensko, the gorge village on the German border and main gateway to České Švýcarsko. From the village, the usual compact loop climbs on marked forest paths towards Pravčická brána and Sokolí hnízdo, then returns via the river/gorge side. Longer variants continue onto Gabriela’s Path, Mezní Louka and the Kamenice river gorges, adding boat sections and increasing the walk to roughly 12.8–15 km, or about 20 km on the full Wild Gorge loop. Hřensko is also practical for day trips from Děčín and Dresden. For a shorter gorge-focused outing, compare Edmund’s Gorge to Hřensko.
History of Pravčická brána and Falcon’s Nest
Pravčická brána has long marked the sandstone landscape between Bohemia and Saxony, becoming a major Romantic-era tourist sight in the 19th century. An inn stood near the arch from 1826, and in 1881 Prince Edmund of Clary-Aldringen built Sokolí hnízdo, the Swiss-style Falcon’s Nest lodge beside the Gate. Heavy visitor pressure damaged the fragile sandstone, so walking on the arch was banned in 1982. The area is now protected within Bohemian Switzerland National Park, declared in 2000.
Notable highlights
- Pravčická brána, the Gate: Europe’s largest natural sandstone arch, with a 26.5 m span and 16 m inner height. You cannot walk across it, but the viewing terraces below give the classic view of the arch and surrounding sandstone cliffs.
- Sokolí hnízdo, Falcon’s Nest: This Swiss-style lodge stands directly beside the Gate and is where the site entry fee is paid. It now functions as a restaurant and small museum.
- Panoramic sandstone lookouts: Terraces and ledges near the Gate look across the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and wooded Bohemian Switzerland gorges, making them the best pause points on the climb.
- Kamenice river gorges, on longer variants: The fuller circuits add the Edmund/Tichá and Wild/Divoká gorges, where short punted boat trips carry walkers between sandstone walls. If you like this terrain, the Jetřichovice Lookout Trail is another Bohemian Switzerland option.
- Elbe sandstone forest and rock formations: The trail passes through beech, spruce and pine woodland dotted with sandstone towers, cliffs and ravines. For more Czech sandstone hiking, consider the Hrubá Skála Rock Town Circuit or the longer Golden Trail of the Czech Paradise.
Challenges to expect
The main effort is the sustained forest climb from Hřensko to the Gate, with steep stone and wooden steps near the approach. Sandstone, shaded rock and steps can be slippery after rain, snow or ice. Summer crowds are common, and the paid Gate site has opening hours. Check current closures before committing to Gabriela’s Path or longer gorge variants, especially after the 2022 wildfire.
