The Zermatt to Saas-Fee Hike is a demanding approx. 55 km, 3-day point-to-point trek in Valais, Switzerland, linking the Mattertal and Saastal via Grächen. It combines the Europaweg and the Höhenweg Grächen to Saas-Fee: two high Alpine balcony trails with sustained views of 4000 m peaks. This is a hard route for sure-footed hikers with a head for heights, not a direct high-pass crossing between the villages.
Route Overview
Zermatt and Saas-Fee sit in parallel valleys separated by the Mischabel massif, so the walking route goes around the northern end via Grächen. A typical 3-day itinerary runs Zermatt to Europahütte, Europahütte to Grächen, then Grächen to Saas-Fee using the Hannigbahn to reach Hannigalp for the Höhenweg. Key places include Tufteren/Sunnegga, Täschalp, the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge near Randa, Europahütte, Hannigalp, Furggen and Balfrinalp. Walser Valleys and Modern High Trails
Grächen, Zermatt and Saas-Fee began as Walser-settled farming and herding hamlets in the Valais before 19th-century alpinism reshaped them into mountaineering resorts. The Europaweg is modern trail infrastructure, opened in 1997 to link the valleys high above the floor. The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge opened in 2017, replacing an earlier 2010 bridge destroyed by rockfall. Together, the Europaweg and Höhenweg form part of the Tour Monte Rosa circuit and the Walker’s Haute Route.
Notable highlights
- Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge: On the Europaweg near Randa, this 494 m pedestrian suspension bridge hangs up to 85 m above the Grabengufer ravine. It opened on 29 July 2017 and is a major exposed feature of the route.
- Europahütte: A Swiss Alpine Club hut at about 2265 m above Randa on the Mischabel flank. It is the standard overnight stop on the Europaweg, with meals and big Matterhorn-area views.
- Europaweg: The approx. 39 km Grächen–Zermatt balcony trail is part of the Tour Monte Rosa and a stage of the Walker’s Haute Route. It is spectacular but prone to rockfall, so check current closures before setting out.
- Höhenweg Grächen to Saas-Fee: This approx. 16.6 km high balcony trail runs from Hannigalp above Grächen via Furggen and Balfrinalp to Saas-Fee. Expect sustained views of the glacier-clad Mischabel peaks.
- Zermatt and the Matterhorn: Zermatt is the car-free resort at the head of the Mattertal beneath the 4478 m Matterhorn. It makes the route feel like a true high-Alps start or finish.
- Saas-Fee: Saas-Fee is a car-free village at the head of the Saastal, ringed by 4000 m peaks and glaciers. It is the natural eastern end of the trek.
Challenges to expect
Expect steep Alpine balcony paths, rocky and exposed traverses, scree, bridges, metal walkways, ladders and fixed ropes in places on the Europaweg. The route reaches about 2417 m and is normally suitable only in the snow-free window from late June to October. Rockfall can close sections, so check trail status locally. Resupply on the trails is essentially non-existent; plan around the Europahütte and valley villages.

Start from Zermatt and follow the Europaweg balcony route above the Mattertal, passing the Tufteren/Sunnegga side and Täschalp area before reaching the Europahütte above Randa. This is one of the exposed Alpine days, so avoid it in poor conditions.
Continue on the Europaweg towards Grächen, including the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge near Randa. The trail remains a high, rocky balcony traverse with potential rockfall closures, so current local information matters.
Use the Hannigbahn from Grächen to Hannigalp, then walk the Höhenweg Grächen to Saas-Fee via Furggen and Balfrinalp. This is a long day of balcony walking above the Saastal before descending to Saas-Fee.
