The D-Day Beaches Circuit is a multi-day, point-to-point coastal walk in Normandy, France, linking key 6 June 1944 landing sites along the Calvados coast. It is not one official signed loop, but an assembled route using the GR223 coastal path, quiet lanes, beaches and bocage. A focused version is about 55 km, usually walked in 4–6 days, and is best graded easy. It suits walkers who want short to moderate days, hotel-to-hotel logistics and a route rich in Second World War history.

Route Overview

There are no fixed termini. Most itineraries run west-to-east along the central landing beaches, starting around Arromanches / Gold Beach or further west near Utah Beach and Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, then finishing inland at Bayeux. Common waypoints include Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, Colleville-sur-Mer, Port-en-Bessin, Longues-sur-Mer and Arromanches-les-Bains. The route is best treated as a linear hotel-to-hotel walk, not a loop. Where it follows the GR223 Sentier des Douaniers, expect red-and-white GR waymarks; off-GR sections need a map, GPX or operator route notes. For another culture-led French walk, compare the Châteaux of the Loire Circuit or the Alsace Vineyard Trail.

D-Day and the Normandy Landings

On 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord across five Normandy beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. American forces landed at Utah and Omaha, British forces at Gold and Sword, and Canadians at Juno, supported by airborne drops and naval bombardment. The landings broke through the Atlantic Wall and began the Battle of Normandy, leading to the liberation of France. Today the coast is a memorial landscape of beaches, cemeteries, batteries and museums, experienced on foot largely via the older GR223 customs officers’ path.

Notable highlights

  • Omaha Beach: The bloodiest of the American landing beaches on D-Day. Walkers encounter a wide, exposed beach backed by bluffs, memorials and a sombre sense of scale.
  • Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer: Set above Omaha Beach, this major American war cemetery is one of the most important memorial stops on the route.
  • Pointe du Hoc: A cratered clifftop strongpoint between Utah and Omaha, stormed by US Rangers who scaled the cliffs under fire. The bunkers and bomb-scarred ground remain visible.
  • Arromanches and the Mulberry Harbour: The remains of the Allied prefabricated harbour still sit in the bay off Gold Beach, making the engineering of the invasion tangible from the shore.
  • Longues-sur-Mer battery: A German Atlantic Wall coastal battery between Gold and Omaha with original guns still in their casemates.
  • Bayeux: The usual inland finish, known for its cathedral, the Bayeux Tapestry and Commonwealth war cemetery.

Challenges to expect

The walking is technically easy, with modest ascent, but do not treat it as a single-day loop. The main challenges are multi-day distance, tide timing on beach sections, exposed coastal weather and navigation where the route leaves the GR223. Expect a mix of firm sand, clifftop tracks, farm paths and quiet tarmac lanes. The area is especially busy around the 6 June commemorations.
