The Rijeka Crnojevića Viewpoint Trail is a short 4.5 km out-and-back day walk in Lake Skadar National Park, Montenegro. It climbs from the historic riverside village of Rijeka Crnojevića towards Pavlova Strana, the roadside viewpoint over the Crnojević River’s famous horseshoe bend. Allow a half day for the steep pull, the viewpoint and a short riverside extension. The grade is Moderate overall: easy beside the river, but steeper on the climb to the overlook.
Route Overview
Start in Rijeka Crnojevića village, near Danilo’s stone bridge, and head up towards the Pavlova Strana viewpoint before returning the same way. The headline route is an out-and-back, with a short extension along the Crnojević River past Obod / Riječki grad possible if conditions and time allow. Surfaces are mixed: narrow asphalt lane or switchback road near the viewpoint access, plus dirt and rocky footpath beside the river. There is no single canonical “viewpoint trail”; the fuller village-to-Obod circuit is covered separately as the Crnojević River Loop. Rijeka Crnojevića and the Obod printing press
Rijeka Crnojevića became a seat of the Crnojević rulers of Zeta after 1477, when Ivan Crnojević withdrew here under Ottoman pressure. At nearby Obod, Đurađ Crnojević established a state printing house in 1493. Under the monk Makarije it produced the Oktoih prvoglasnik, the first South Slavic book printed in Cyrillic, completed on 4 January 1494. The town later grew as an important Montenegrin river port, and Danilo’s stone bridge dates from 1853.
Notable highlights
Pavlova Strana viewpoint (~680 m): The main objective: a roadside vista over the Crnojević River’s near-symmetrical horseshoe bend as it curves towards Lake Skadar. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light.
Danilo’s stone bridge: The old stone arch bridge in Rijeka Crnojevića was built in 1853 by Prince Danilo I in memory of his father. Its reflection in the still river is one of the village’s classic views.
Obod / Riječki grad ruins: Obod above the village is linked to the Crnojević printing house, founded in 1493. It produced the Oktoih prvoglasnik, an early Cyrillic printed book.
Obodska pećina: This karst cave is the source where the Crnojević River emerges below Obod hill. It can be entered, but watch for bats and uneven ground.
Lake Skadar National Park: The river drains into Lake Skadar, a major wetland and bird area known for pelicans, herons and summer water lilies.
Challenges to expect
The main challenge is not distance but gradient: the climb to Pavlova Strana is short, steep and partly on a narrow switchback road. Riverside sections are easier, though dirt paths can be rocky. Summer around Lake Skadar is hot and humid, so spring and autumn are more comfortable. There are no mountain huts, and the route is best treated as a short day walk rather than a wilderness trek.

Start by Danilo’s stone bridge in Rijeka Crnojevića, climb towards the Pavlova Strana viewpoint for the horseshoe-bend view, then return the same way. Add a short riverside extension towards Obod / Riječki grad and Obodska pećina if you want more time by the Crnojević River.
