The “Bar to Old Ulcinj Trail” is best treated as the real Mount Rumija day hike above Bar in Montenegro, not as a Bar-to-Ulcinj trek. It is a hard, roughly 13 km out-and-back walk to the 1,594 m Rumija summit, with about 1,000 m of ascent and 5–7 hours of walking. It suits fit hikers who want a steep coastal-mountain day, rocky terrain, and the rare summit view of both Lake Skadar and the Adriatic Sea.

Route Overview

Start and finish above Bar, commonly from Stari Bar, Tudemili, or higher at Dobri Do if you drive part of the access road. The route climbs old farm and shepherd tracks through lower woodland, then steepens onto loose stone, rock and boulders for the final push to Mount Rumija. The turnaround is the summit, marked by the small St. Trinity chapel, before returning the same way. This is an out-and-back mountain hike, not a point-to-point route to Ulcinj. Stari Bar, the Mirovica olive tree, Ulcinj Old Town and Velika Plaza are nearby road-access sights, not waypoints on one trail. For an easier coastal walk in Montenegro, see the Budva to Sveti Stefan Coastal Path; for bigger days in the Durmitor mountains, compare the Bobotov Kuk Summit Trail or the gentler Black Lake Loop.

Rumija, Stari Bar and Ulcinj: sacred mountain and old towns

Rumija has long been a sacred mountain: for around a thousand years, people of different faiths have carried a cross to the summit on Trinity Day. A small metal chapel was placed on the summit in 2005. At the mountain’s foot, Stari Bar grew from a late-Roman or early-Byzantine settlement into a medieval town shaped by Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rule, then was largely abandoned after the 19th century. Further south, Ulcinj is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic and was known as a corsair port in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Notable highlights

  • Mount Rumija summit (1,594 m): The high point of Montenegro’s coastal range and one of the few viewpoints where Lake Skadar and the Adriatic Sea can be seen at the same time. The small red-and-white Holy Trinity chapel on top is linked to an annual three-faith pilgrimage.
  • Stari Bar (Old Bar): A ruined hillside town at the foot of Rumija, with city walls, Byzantine churches, an Ottoman-era aqueduct and layers of Roman, Venetian and Ottoman history. It is a practical and culturally rich start or finish for the hike.
  • Mirovica olive tree: An ancient wild olive near Stari Bar, believed to be over 2,000 years old and protected since 1963. It is a short separate visit in a region known for old olive groves.
  • Lake Skadar view: From the upper mountain, the lake lies to the north while the Adriatic sits to the south, making Rumija unusually rewarding for a coastal summit.
  • Old Town of Ulcinj: A cliff-top fortified old town south of Bar, reached by road rather than on the hike. Pair it with Rumija if you want a mountain-and-coast day in the same part of Montenegro.
  • Velika Plaza (Long Beach): A roughly 12–13 km sandy beach south of Ulcinj and a straightforward post-hike cool-off by road, not part of the walking route.

Challenges to expect

Expect a long, hot and exposed mountain day, especially in midsummer. The lower route uses old tracks and forest paths, but the upper section becomes steep, rocky and boulder-strewn, with some scrambling. Karst terrain means little water on the route, and there are no huts. Do not plan this as a waymarked Bar-to-Ulcinj traverse; that route is not verifiable.
