The Rinka Waterfall Loop is a short half-day walk of about 4.3 km to Slap Rinka at the head of Logar Valley (Logarska dolina) in northern Slovenia. It suits hikers who want a quick Kamnik-Savinja Alps outing with a steep finish rather than a full mountain day. The walk is moderate: the valley approach is easy, but the final stony climb to the waterfall and Orlovo gnezdo viewpoint is rocky, steep and slippery when wet.

Route Overview

Start at the upper car park at the end of the Logar Valley road, near Dom planincev v Logarski dolini. From there, climb the stony beech-forest path to the base of Rinka Falls, then continue on the marked path to Orlovo gnezdo (Eagle’s Nest), the viewpoint and snack bar above the cascade. Return to the car park by the alternative path to make the listed short loop. Many GPS tracks here are simple out-and-backs, and the established Logar Valley Trail is a longer there-and-back of about 7 km one-way. Rinka Falls and Logar Valley Heritage

Rinka Falls has long been the showpiece of Logar Valley, a protected landscape park with a strong mountaineering tradition shared by Slovenian and Austrian alpinists. Frischaufov dom na Okreslju, higher above the falls, reflects that climbing heritage. The waterfall was proclaimed a natural heritage feature and natural monument in 1987, recognising its importance at the head of the valley and its role as the symbolic source of the Savinja River.

Notable highlights

Rinka Falls (Slap Rinka, 90 m free fall / 105 m total): Slovenia’s second-highest waterfall drops from the Okreselj cirque into a rock amphitheatre at the head of Logar Valley. It is regarded as the source of the Savinja River.
Orlovo gnezdo (Eagle’s Nest): A tiny wooden viewpoint and snack bar perched beside the upper part of the falls. The steep marked path gives close views of the cascade and back down the valley.
Logar Valley (Logarska dolina): A protected glacial valley framed by the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Its easy ethnographic trail passes farms, meadows, huts and smaller falls before reaching Rinka.
Source of the Savinja: Snowmelt and karst water from the Okreselj basin feed the falls, marking the symbolic birthplace of one of Slovenia’s significant rivers.
Winter ice climbing: In hard winters the frozen cascade becomes a noted ice-climbing venue, though the walking route can be icy and road conditions change.

Challenges to expect

The main difficulty is the final ascent: a stony, rocky path with steps and fixed rope or handrail in places. It can be slippery after rain and icy in winter.
