The Örö Fortress Island Trail is an easy 11 km walking day on Örö, a former military island in Southwest Finland and part of the Archipelago Sea National Park. It is not a long-distance thru-hike: the route combines two waymarked loop nature trails, the southern 6" Circuit and northern 120 mm Circuit, starting from the harbour/village. Expect flat coastal and forest walking, cobblestone military roads, gun batteries, beaches and ferry-based logistics. It suits families, history-minded walkers and hikers wanting a relaxed island day or overnight.

Route Overview

Both Örö nature trails start and finish in the harbour/village area, where the passenger ferry lands and the main services are clustered. The southern Blue route, the 6" Circuit, heads towards the southern tip past gun positions, sea views and a suspension bridge. The northern Red route, the 120 mm Circuit, runs through coastal meadows, old forest and the open western shore. Walk either loop separately or combine both for about 11 km using the marked trail network and old cobblestone military roads. Access is by passenger ferry only, mainly from Kasnäs, with seasonal Hanko connections. For a longer archipelago trip, compare the Archipelago National Park Trail or the ferry-and-road based Archipelago Trail (Saariston Rengastie).

Örö’s Fortress History

Örö was fortified by Imperial Russia as part of Peter the Great’s Naval Fortress, built to defend sea approaches to St Petersburg. Construction began in 1915 after the island was taken from local villagers, with batteries, magazines, observation towers, barracks, roads and jetties built at speed. After Finnish independence, Örö passed to the Finnish Defence Forces and served as a garrison and training fort. In 1941 its guns supported the nearby Battle of Bengtskär. Military use ended in the 2000s, and Örö opened to the public in 2015.

Notable highlights

  • 12-inch (305 mm) Obukhov coastal guns: Örö’s signature military relics are massive Russian-built coastal cannons, with one restored as a museum gun in its casemate. Shells weighed up to about 500 kg and had a range of roughly 45 km.
  • 6" (Canet) and 120 mm gun batteries: The two marked loops are named after these batteries. The southern 6" Circuit visits gun positions, while the northern 120 mm Circuit passes ruins of the 120 mm battery.
  • Cobblestone military roads: About 6 km of granite cobbled garrison roads link the barracks, batteries and harbour. Their straight patrol sections were nicknamed “Long Boredom” and “Short Boredom” by conscripts.
  • Suspension bridge and southern tip: The 6" loop crosses a footbridge and reaches open coastal viewpoints over the outer Archipelago Sea. On a clear day, Bengtskär lighthouse is visible offshore.
  • Sandy beaches and coastal meadows: Örö has sand beaches, dunes, heath and grazed treeless meadows, unusual habitats in the rocky Finnish archipelago. These help make the island especially rich in butterflies and plants.
  • Örö barracks and village: The harbour-side military buildings now hold the small museum, hotel, restaurants and saunas. This is the practical start and finish for both loops.

Challenges to expect

The walking is easy and well signposted, but the logistics matter. There is no visitor car access: your day is shaped by the ferry timetable from Kasnäs or seasonal Hanko services, and booking ahead is advised. The outer shores can be exposed and breezy, even in summer, with typical daytime temperatures around 16–20°C. Services are seasonal, so carry water, layers and food if visiting outside peak periods. If you want a mainland national-park walk, consider Nuuksio National Park Trail or the coastal Ekenäs Archipelago Trail.
