The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape Circuit is an easy 24 km walking loop in South Moravia, Czechia, near Breclav and the Austrian border. It links Lednice Chateau and Valtice Chateau through UNESCO-listed parkland, floodplain forest, ponds, vineyards and Romantic follies. This is a one-day walk: flat, well waymarked and suitable for hikers who want architecture and landscape rather than a mountain challenge. The distance is the main effort; the walking itself is gentle.

Route Overview

Most walkers start and finish at Lednice Chateau, though Valtice Chateau also works as a start point. The grand loop follows Czech tourist waymarks, principally the red trail, with adjoining park paths to connect the main monuments. A typical circuit runs Lednice Chateau -> Minaret -> Apollo Temple -> John's Castle -> Lednice fishponds -> Novy Dvur -> Three Graces -> St Hubert's Chapel -> Rendez-vous -> Valtice Chateau, then returns through the estate. Lednice and Valtice are roughly 7 km apart, so shorter point-to-point or partial loops are possible, but this guide covers the 24 km circular route. A Liechtenstein-designed UNESCO landscape

The Lednice-Valtice landscape was shaped over roughly three centuries by the House of Liechtenstein, who made Valtice their principal residence for about 700 years until 1939. From the late 1700s they laid out their South Moravian estates as a single Romantic garden on English landscape principles, connecting chateaux, avenues, ponds and follies in Baroque, neoclassical, Gothic Revival and Moorish styles. The area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 as one of Europe’s largest designed landscapes.

Notable highlights

Lednice Chateau: A lavish Gothic Revival summer palace set in a large English-style landscape park. It is the usual start and finish point for the circuit.
The Minaret: A Moorish-Revival viewing tower in Lednice park, reached early on the loop. Its balconies give views over the ponds and floodplain forest.
John’s Castle (Januv hrad / Janohrad): An artificial Gothic Revival “ruin” built as a hunting lodge on the Dyje river. It is one of the route’s clearest examples of Romantic landscape design.
Temple of Apollo: An Empire-style temple on a low hill above Mlynsky pond. It sits on the red trail about 2 km from Lednice and is one of the few slight rises on the walk.
Temple of the Three Graces and St Hubert’s Chapel: Two set-piece follies between Lednice and Valtice, linking open meadows, woodland and formal sightlines.
Valtice Chateau: A grand Baroque residence and former Liechtenstein seat, now associated with the Czech National Wine Salon in its cellars.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy walk, but 24 km is still a full day. Expect mixed asphalt, gravel, dirt tracks and forest paths, with almost no sustained climbing. Navigation is straightforward on Czech tourist waymarks, mainly the red trail, though overlapping variants can make it worth checking junctions. Summer can be busy around the chateaux; spring and autumn are quieter. Interiors and some follies may have seasonal opening hours.
