The Ancient Eleusis Way is a 22 km, one-day, easy point-to-point walk in Attica, Greece, following the modern line of the Iera Odos — the ancient Sacred Way — from Kerameikos in Athens to Elefsina. This is a historical and cultural itinerary, not a backcountry trail: much of it uses paved urban roads, busy avenues and the Athens–Corinth corridor. It suits walkers interested in ancient Greek history who are comfortable with traffic, fumes, limited shade and some route-finding through the western Athens suburbs.

Route Overview

Start at the Sacred Gate in the Kerameikos cemetery of ancient Athens and head west/north-west along the modern Iera Odos through Gazi, Aigaleo, Agia Varvara and Chaidari. The route crosses the Cephissus (Kifisos), climbs gently to the Daphni saddle on Mount Aigaleo, then descends past the Daphni area, Lake Koumoundourou and the Thriasian Plain to the Archaeological Site of Eleusis in modern Elefsina. Most walkers base in Athens and return by suburban bus or train. For other Greek history-focused walks, compare Ancient Mycenae to Epidaurus and the Delphi to Chrisso Trail.

The Sacred Way and the Eleusinian Mysteries

The Sacred Way carried the annual procession from Athens to Eleusis for the Eleusinian Mysteries, the major mystery cult of the ancient Greek world. The rites honoured Demeter and Persephone, linking harvest, death and rebirth, and the procession from the Sacred Gate was the festival’s great public moment. Worshippers came from across the Greek world from roughly the 6th century BC until the sanctuary’s decline in the late 4th century AD. The modern Iera Odos still follows the same broad line.

Notable highlights

Kerameikos and the Sacred Gate: The ancient cemetery of Athens and the traditional starting point of the Eleusinian procession. The surviving foundations mark the historical beginning of the Sacred Way.

Iera Odos and the Cephissus crossing: The modern avenue preserves the name and line of the ancient road west from Athens. Pilgrims crossed the Cephissus (Kifisos) here, where ritual offerings included children dedicating locks of hair.

Daphni Monastery: An eleventh-century Byzantine monastery and UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its gold-ground mosaics. It sits at the Daphni saddle, roughly halfway along the walk, on the site of an earlier sanctuary of Apollo.

Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Daphni: Roadside niches and votive remains mark a small shrine beside the pass. It is one of the cult stops that once punctuated the ancient procession.

Thriasian Plain and Lake Koumoundourou: After Daphni, the route drops onto the now heavily industrialised Thriasian Plain. The approach passes near Lake Koumoundourou before entering Elefsina.

Eleusis Archaeological Site: The endpoint is the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone, home of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The Telesterion initiation hall stood here, and modern Elefsina was a European Capital of Culture for 2023.

Challenges to expect

The walking is physically easy, with only a modest rise over the Daphni pass, but the environment is demanding. Expect long paved sections, urban navigation, traffic noise, fumes and limited shade. This is not a consistently waymarked footpath; the official Attica version is often treated as a hybrid walk-and-drive itinerary. Avoid hot summer midday conditions. No permit is needed for public roads, but paid archaeological sites charge standard admission. For a true long-distance trail, see the E4 European Long-Distance Trail Greek Section.
