The Glen Nevis Circuit is a low-level 13 km loop in Lochaber, Scotland, just outside Fort William and beneath Ben Nevis. It is a moderate day walk, usually taking around half a day, following the River Nevis to the Lower Falls at Polldubh before returning by forestry track. Choose it if you want a Highland glen walk without climbing Ben Nevis or tackling the Nevis Gorge. Expect rough, boggy riverside path rather than a polished waymarked trail.
Route Overview
The usual start and finish is the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, also known as the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre, where pay-and-display parking applies. The loop heads up the glen beside the River Nevis / Water of Nevis, passing the Glen Nevis campsite area and Glen Nevis Youth Hostel vicinity before reaching Polldubh and the Lower Falls. It then returns on the opposite side of the glen using forestry and logging tracks. The circuit can be walked either way, but the riverside leg is the rougher section and can be slow when wet. This is separate from the Steall Falls / Nevis Gorge walk further up the glen.
Glen Nevis history and film connections
Glen Nevis is a classic Lochaber glen running up from Fort William between Ben Nevis and the Mamores, drained by the River Nevis. It has long been Clan Cameron country and is overlooked by Dun Deardail, an Iron Age hillfort above the lower glen. In the 20th century its scenery became a major film backdrop, notably for Braveheart, with further associations with Highlander, Rob Roy and parts of the Harry Potter films.
Notable highlights
- Lower Falls at Polldubh: The circuit’s turning point, where the River Nevis drops over a rock step beside the Glen Nevis road. It is one of the most photographed low-level spots in the glen.
- River Nevis and the wooded glen: The outward leg follows the Water of Nevis through a mix of broadleaf woodland and conifer plantation, giving a quieter river walk than the busier gorge route beyond.
- Ben Nevis backdrop: Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain at 1,345 m, rises above the north side of the glen, while the Mamores frame the south side.
- Polldubh Crags: These rugged outcrops above the Lower Falls are well-known low-level rock-climbing crags and are often busy with climbers in dry weather.
- Braveheart and Highlander country: Glen Nevis was used as a filming location for Braveheart, Highlander, Rob Roy and parts of the Harry Potter films.
Challenges to expect
The main difficulty is underfoot, not altitude. The riverside path is rough, eroded, boggy and often waterlogged after rain, so waterproof footwear is sensible. The route is not a formally waymarked named trail, and the outward path can be hard to follow in places. Highland weather changes quickly, and midges can be a nuisance in summer.
