The Bucegi Plateau Circuit is a 13 km, one-day moderate hike across Romania’s Bucegi Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians. Reached mainly by cable car from Bușteni to Babele or from Sinaia to Cota 2000, it suits hikers who want high-altitude scenery without a long valley climb. Expect open alpine grassland above 2,000 m, well-marked paths, rocky sections, and major landmarks including Babele, the Sphinx and the Heroes’ Cross. Route Overview
The listing is best treated as a loop from a plateau access point, usually Babele or Piatra Arsă, with cable cars doing the big ascent and descent. From the cable-car area, the circuit links the Babele rock formations, the Sphinx and the Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman Peak before returning across the open plateau. A common alternative is a point-to-point traverse from Sinaia’s Cota 2000 via Piatra Arsă to Babele, then down by cable car to Bușteni. Bucegi Plateau History and Landmarks
The Bucegi Plateau has been protected since 1935 and now lies within Bucegi Natural Park. Its best-known formations, the Sphinx and Babele, were shaped by long-term wind and frost erosion of conglomerate rock and are tied to Romanian folklore. The Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman was erected in 1926–1928 at the initiative of Queen Maria of Romania as a First World War memorial. Cable cars from Bușteni and Sinaia later made this high plateau one of Romania’s most visited mountain landscapes.
Notable highlights
The Sphinx (about 2,216 m): A roughly 8 m sandstone/conglomerate outcrop shaped by wind and frost into a human-face profile from the right angle. It is one of Romania’s best-known natural monuments and a key photo stop on the plateau.
Babele, “The Old Women” (2,206 m): Mushroom- and pillar-shaped conglomerate rocks beside Cabana Babele and the Bușteni cable-car top station. They are easy to include near the start or end of the loop.
Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman Peak: A 28 m steel cross on Caraiman Peak, built in 1926–1928 to honour Romanian soldiers who died in the First World War. It is the route’s defining landmark and is visible from the Prahova Valley below.
The high plateau itself: Open alpine meadow above 2,000 m sits on top of steep rock walls, giving broad walking and clear-day views towards the Piatra Craiului and Făgăraș ranges.
Optional Omu Peak detour: Omu, at 2,505 m, is the highest point of the Bucegi Mountains, but it is not part of the standard circuit. Treat it as a longer there-and-back extension if conditions and time allow.
Challenges to expect
The walking is not technical, but the plateau is exposed, high and easy to misread in poor visibility. Fog is the main hazard: the open ground has few landmarks, so carry GPS or offline maps even though the Romanian coloured-stripe waymarking is good in clear weather. Snow can linger into late spring, weather changes quickly, and cable-car logistics or queues can affect timing. For a much bigger Romanian mountain outing, compare the Carpathian Ridge Trail.

Follow marked plateau paths linking Babele, the Sphinx and the Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman Peak, then return across the open alpine ground to your start point. Allow a full hiking day, especially if using cable cars.
