The Delphi to Chrisso Trail is an easy 4.5 km point-to-point walk in Phocis, central Greece, descending from Delphi to Chrisso in about 1.5–2.5 hours. It follows the upper section of the ancient pilgrim route from Kirra to Apollo’s sanctuary and overlaps the E4 European Long-Distance Path. Expect old stone steps, dirt track, loose rocky sections and wide views over the Pleistos valley and Crisaean olive plain. It suits hikers wanting a short historical walk rather than a full-day mountain route.

Route Overview

Start at Delphi village or the archaeological site, around 570 m, and walk south/southwest downhill towards Chrisso (Chryso), around 200 m. The route is linear and usually walked in this direction, losing roughly 350 m on old stone zigzags, dirt path and rural track. Key features are the Phaedriades cliffs behind Delphi, the Pleistos valley below, the Crisaean olive grove and the approach to Chrisso, a quiet village associated with ancient Krisa. Ancient pilgrim route to Delphi

Chrisso stands on or beside ancient Krisa, a Phocian city named by Homer and traditionally linked with the early history of Delphi. Pilgrims once landed at Kirra on the Gulf of Corinth and climbed through the Crisaean plain to the sanctuary of Apollo; this walk follows the upper part of that route in reverse. Krisa’s treatment of pilgrims is said to have helped trigger the First Sacred War, after which the plain was dedicated to Apollo. Challenges to expect

The walk is short and mostly downhill, but the surface is not pavement-smooth: expect stone steps, dirt, loose rock and some rural track. The main difficulty is heat, especially in summer, because the descent is open and offers little shade. Carry water, start early in warm weather and take care on loose stone. Navigation is helped by waymarking, but check your line where path and tracks meet.
