The Skaftafell Glacier Trail is a short, easy 4.1 km out-and-back walk in Vatnajökull National Park, south-east Iceland. Officially marked S1, it runs from Skaftafell visitor centre to a viewpoint at the snout of Skaftafellsjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the walk, with about 80 m of ascent. It suits families, first-time glacier-country walkers and anyone wanting a low-commitment Skaftafell route without tackling the longer Svartifoss or Kristínartindar trails.

Route Overview

Start just east of Skaftafell visitor centre (Skaftafellsstofa), beside the campsite and paid visitor-centre car park near the Ring Road (Route 1). The S1 Glacier trail heads across the glacier foreland on a mostly flat, maintained route: paved or sealed path for roughly the first half, then comfortable crushed gravel. The main objective is the lookout at the front of Skaftafellsjökull, above its moraine plain, kettle holes and small proglacial lake. Return the same way to the visitor centre. Skaftafell, Öræfi and a Retreating Glacier

Skaftafell was once a remote farming area in the Öræfi district, whose name is linked to the destructive 1362 eruption of Öræfajökull. Later eruptions and jökulhlaups down the Skeiðará reshaped the sandar plains and helped isolate the area. Skaftafell became a national park on 15 September 1967, with local farmer Ragnar Stefánsson as its first ranger; farming ceased in 1988. In 2008 it was absorbed into Vatnajökull National Park. Skaftafellsjökull reached its modern maximum around 1870–1880 and has retreated since.

Notable highlights

  • Skaftafellsjökull glacier snout (outlet of Vatnajökull): The trail’s goal is the crevassed, debris-streaked tongue of Skaftafellsjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap by volume.
  • Proglacial lake and small icebergs: The glacier now ends in a meltwater lagoon that can hold small icebergs, making glacial retreat easy to see at close range.
  • Glacier garden and moraines: The path crosses streamlined moraines, kettle holes and newly exposed ground where vegetation is gradually recolonising the glacier foreland.
  • Interpretation trail (16 numbered markers): Markers explain the geology, glacier behaviour and changing plant life, which makes this a useful educational walk for families.
  • Öræfi mountain backdrop (Hvannadalshnúkur nearby): The walk sits below the mountains on Vatnajökull’s southern edge, with Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s highest summit at 2,110 m, in the nearby Öræfajökull massif.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy, low-level walk, but the glacier environment still needs care. Stay on the marked path and do not approach or walk onto the glacier ice without a guide and equipment: the snout is unstable, with crevasses, meltwater and calving into the lagoon. Icelandic weather can change fast, even in summer. Wear sturdy shoes; the gravel section can be slippery when wet.
