The Black Sea Coastal Trail is an informal coastal walk in Romania, not an officially waymarked long-distance trail. The core route runs roughly 80 km from Constanța south to Vama Veche and the Bulgarian border, usually taking 3-4 days. It is easy in gradient: almost flat, near sea level, and mostly beach, promenade and gentle tracks. It suits hikers who want a low-level seaside journey with resort facilities, history and wild southern beaches, but who are comfortable navigating with GPS rather than trail signs.

Route Overview

This is a point-to-point walk heading south from Constanța, Romania’s main Black Sea port and ancient Tomis. The northern end includes the Mamaia resort strip, then the route follows beaches and promenades through Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud before reaching the low headland of Cape Tuzla. South of Mangalia and the Saturn-Venus-Neptun-Olimp resort cluster, the coast becomes less manicured around 2 Mai and Vama Veche, ending near the Bulgarian frontier by Durankulak. Expect to piece the line together on beaches, resort promenades, dirt or field tracks and occasional asphalt detours. For a very different Romanian hike, compare the Carpathian Ridge Trail, the Bucegi Plateau Circuit or the cross-Europe E8 European Long-Distance Path.

Ancient Tomis, Callatis and the Resort Coast

The Romanian Black Sea coast has a long urban history. Constanța began as the Greek colony of Tomis in the 6th century BC and later became a Roman city; the poet Ovid was exiled there in AD 8, and the Roman Edifice with Mosaic still survives. Farther south, Mangalia stands on ancient Callatis. Under communism, much of the coast was developed for mass tourism, while 2 Mai and Vama Veche remained less built-up near the former militarised border and developed a bohemian reputation.

Notable highlights

  • Constanța / ancient Tomis: The start city is Romania’s main Black Sea port, with Ovid Square and the preserved Roman Edifice with Mosaic giving the walk an immediate historical anchor.
  • Mamaia and Eforie promenades: Long sandy beaches and resort promenades make the northern section flat, easy and well supplied with cafés, accommodation and public transport.
  • Cape Tuzla lighthouse: A low bluff with a historic lighthouse, Cape Tuzla is the main elevated headland on an otherwise flat shoreline.
  • Mangalia / ancient Callatis: This southern resort town sits on the site of the Greek colony of Callatis and has archaeological remains and a local museum.
  • 2 Mai and Vama Veche: These southern villages are known for wide, less manicured beaches, informal camping traditions and a free-spirited music-and-campfire culture.
  • Durankulak border wetlands: Near the Bulgarian frontier, coastal lakes and wetlands, including Durankulak Lake just over the border, give the route a quieter natural finish.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty is not ascent: the coast is essentially flat. The main challenges are soft sand, long unshaded sections, summer heat, crowds in July-August and occasional route-finding where ports, marinas or resort development block the shoreline. There is no unified waymarking, so use GPS tracks and be ready for short inland asphalt sections. Water, food and accommodation are usually easier in resort areas than on the wilder southern beaches.
