The Slivnica Witch Mountain Trail is a short day hike from Cerknica in Notranjska, Slovenia, climbing Mount Slivnica to 1,114 m. Expect about 7–8 km out and back, around 3 hours of walking, and roughly 535 m of ascent. The marked route is easy to moderate: a steepish forest start gives way to gentler open meadows. It suits hikers wanting a half-day summit, family-friendly folklore and wide views over the disappearing Lake Cerknica. Route Overview

Start and finish in Cerknica, at the trailhead by the bowling alley and car park on Cesta 4. maja. The standard route is an out-and-back: climb from town through a well-trodden forest path, cross open grassy slopes, then reach Dom na Slivnici mountain hut near the top. The 1,114 m summit of Velika Slivnica, marked by a telecoms transmitter, is about 5 minutes beyond the hut. Coprniška jama, the Witches’ Cave, sits below the summit. Witches of Slivnica and the Valvasor legend

Slivnica’s witch reputation is centuries old. Janez Vajkard Valvasor recorded the mountain in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola in 1689, describing witches, sorceresses and hags gathering and dancing on the peak. Local farmers blamed the Slivnica witches for hail, storms and misfortune, while the winter mist rising from Coprniška jama gave the legend a natural source. The story still appears in Cerknica’s Shrovetide carnival, where Uršula the witch is a central figure.

Notable highlights

Coprniška jama (Witches’ Cave): A karst cave just below the summit, described by Valvasor in 1689 as “a hole that makes a storm”. In winter, warm air rising from the cave forms mist, feeding the witch legend.
Witch folklore and sculptures: Slivnica is associated with witches led by Uršula, who supposedly flew from Mount Klek in Croatia to brew storms. Wooden witch figures and decorations add character to the walk.
Views over Lake Cerknica: The open upper slopes and a bench/viewpoint with a telescope give panoramas over the intermittent Lake Cerknica, the Javorniki hills, Snežnik and toward the Slovenian Alps.
Dom na Slivnici hut: A welcoming mountain hut close to the top, known for traditional Notranjska dishes and a useful food stop on this short hike.
Velika Slivnica summit: The 1,114 m summit is wooded with deciduous and pine forest, so the best views are from the meadows just below rather than from the very top.

Challenges to expect

The route is not long, but the first forest section is steepish and the very bottom is partly unmarked, though well established. Higher up, the open meadows can feel hot in high summer. The summit itself is wooded and viewless, so do not rush past the viewpoints below. In winter the trail may still be walkable, but conditions are colder and the cave mist phenomenon is most likely.
