Beklemeto to Kozya Stena is a 7.5 km one-day ridge walk in Bulgaria, crossing part of Central Balkan National Park on the main Stara Planina crest. It runs west from Beklemeto, also known as Troyan Pass, to Kozya Stena hut on the edge of Kozya Stena Reserve. Expect a moderate, waymarked mountain route: grassy ridges, beech-fir forest, rocky limestone sections and exposed ground near the Goat's Wall cliffs. It suits fit day hikers who want a short section of the E3 / Kom-Emine route.

Route Overview

Start at Beklemeto / Troyan Pass, the high road crossing crowned nearby by the Arch of Freedom monument, and walk west on the red E3 / Kom-Emine waymarks. The trail follows the main Stara Planina ridge through forest, open meadows and rocky outcrops toward Kozya Stena peak and the Kozya Stena cliffs, finishing at Kozya Stena hut at about 1,610 m. This is a point-to-point route: the start is on a road pass, while the hut has no road access, so plan a return on foot or continue west toward Eho hut. For a longer version of this mountain crest, see the Central Balkan Ridge Trail; for other Bulgarian mountain objectives, compare Cherni Vrah Summit Trail and Bezbog to Popovo Lake Trail.

Troyan Pass, the Arch of Freedom and Kozya Stena Reserve

Troyan Pass / Beklemeto is an old north-south crossing of the Balkan Mountains, historically linked with trade and military movement between the Danube plain and the Thracian / Karlovo basin. The nearby Arch of Freedom monument commemorates the 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War of Liberation. Kozya Stena Reserve was declared on 22 December 1987 to protect its alpine edelweiss, old beech-fir forest and limestone cliff habitat.

Notable highlights

  • Beklemeto / Troyan Pass and the Arch of Freedom: The walk starts at the highest road pass in the Balkan Mountains, around 1,525 m. A short detour east reaches the 35 m concrete Arch of Freedom on Goraltepe.
  • E3 / Kom-Emine main ridge: The route follows red waymarks on the Stara Planina crest, part of the E3 European long-distance path and Bulgaria's Kom-Emine trail from Mt Kom to Cape Emine. It gives open views north and south when the weather is clear.
  • Kozya Stena cliffs: The 'Goat's Wall' is a near-vertical limestone cliff line that gives the peak and reserve their name. The summer path skirts the lower edge, with more exposed and rocky walking than the distance suggests.
  • Kozya Stena Reserve and edelweiss: This protected area is noted for old beech-fir forest, rare alpine plants and edelweiss. Hikers must stay on marked paths inside the reserve.
  • Kozya Stena hut: The route ends at a road-free mountain hut at about 1,610 m. It is a useful overnight, lunch or turnaround point, and the ridge continues west toward Eho hut.

Challenges to expect

The distance is short, but this is still mountain terrain. Expect rocky sections, exposure near the Kozya Stena cliffs, and fast changes in weather on the ridge: fog, wind, thunderstorms and temperature drops are all real concerns. Red waymarks are good, but carry a map or GPS. Water can be limited in dry spells, and hut beds and meals are paid.
