The Weaver Hills Circular Walk is a 7.5 km half-day loop in north-east Staffordshire, England, usually starting near Wootton. It is a moderate walk over a small limestone range just outside the Peak District National Park, climbing to the trig point on The Walk at 371 m. Expect grassy hill paths, farmland, quiet lanes and some boggy open-access ground. It suits hikers wanting a short hill walk with wide views, modest ascent and straightforward logistics, but not a fully waymarked route.

Route Overview

The usual circuit starts and finishes at the small car park west of Wootton village on the road towards Ramshorn, making this a simple loop rather than a point-to-point walk. Routes vary, but a mid-length circuit heads through lower farmland and pasture before climbing onto the open Weaver Hills. The high point is The Walk, marked by an Ordnance Survey trig pillar, then the route descends back towards Wootton by field paths, tracks and quiet lanes. There is no public transport detail in the verified brief; free parking near Wootton is the practical access point. Prehistoric hilltops, limestone quarrying and Rousseau

The Weaver Hills have evidence of long human use, including ten or more Bronze Age tumuli on the range. Their Carboniferous limestone has also been quarried for generations, with sites such as Wardlow and the still-active Cauldon Low on the flanks. South of the main summit, Wootton Hall adds an unusual philosophical link: Jean-Jacques Rousseau lodged there in 1766 while in exile from France.

Notable highlights

The Walk summit trig point (371 m): The high point of the Weaver Hills is marked by an Ordnance Survey trig pillar and makes the natural goal of the circuit. It gives wide views from an exposed, grassy top.
Dove Valley and Peak District views: From the summit area you can look east across the Dove Valley and north towards the Peak District National Park, with the Churnet Valley to the west.
White Peak limestone: The hills are Carboniferous limestone and geologically part of the White Peak, despite lying just outside the national park boundary. Limestone quarries at Wardlow and Cauldon Low show the working landscape around the range.
Prehistoric tumuli: The hilltops carry ten or more Bronze Age burial mounds, a visible reminder that these open tops were important long before modern footpaths.
Wootton Hall and Rousseau: Wootton Hall, south of the main summit, is associated with Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who stayed there in 1766 while in exile from France.
CRoW Open Access land: Much of the higher ground is Open Access land, so the final approach to the trig point is more about choosing a sensible grassy line than following a formal path.

Challenges to expect

This is short, but not entirely easy. The summit area is exposed and windy, and the edge of the Open Access land can be boggy, especially outside drier months. Navigation needs attention because the route is only partly waymarked and there is no single official path to the trig point. Expect drystone-wall crossings, grassy tussocks, farm tracks, quiet lanes and minimal facilities on the walk itself.
