The Zărnești Gorge Trail is a 10 km, one-day moderate loop in Piatra Craiului National Park, near Zărnești in Brașov County, Romania. It follows the limestone canyon of Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor before climbing through forest to Curmătura Hut at 1,470 m and returning by a separate meadow-and-forest path. With about 600 m of ascent, waymarked trails and no technical or exposed sections on the standard loop, it suits fit walkers wanting a first taste of the Piatra Craiului massif.

Route Overview

Start and finish at Botorog’s Fountain (Fântâna lui Botorog), the road-end trailhead on the edge of Zărnești. The classic loop heads up the dirt road to the mouth of Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor, reached after about 30–40 minutes, then follows the gorge and climbs through forest to Curmătura Hut (Cabana Curmătura). From the hut and Curmătura saddle, return on the yellow-dot trail through the Zănoaga/Curmătura meadow and forest back to Botorog’s Fountain. The final road access is unpaved but car-friendly. Piatra Craiului National Park and the Zărnești Gorges

The gorge sits within Piatra Craiului National Park, first protected as a nature reserve on 28 March 1938 and re-established as a national park in 1990. The park covers 14,773 hectares across Brașov and Argeș counties, with Cheile Zărneștilor itself protected as a reserve. The massif is known for its long limestone ridge and for Dianthus callizonus, the endemic Piatra Craiului pink. The Botorog–gorge–Curmătura loop is the standard first walk into the range.

Notable highlights

Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor (Zărnești Gorges): A roughly 2 km limestone canyon with 100–200 m walls and a stony floor. It is the scenic core of the hike and a recognised rock-climbing venue.
Curmătura Hut (Cabana Curmătura, 1,470 m): The high point and natural pause on the loop, with meals, basic lodging and camping. The adjoining meadow gives views towards Piatra Mică and the main Piatra Craiului ridge.
Botorog’s Fountain: The road-end trailhead and reliable spring used by most hikers before entering the gorge.
Piatra Craiului ridge: Romania’s longest limestone ridge, around 25 km, with 8 km above 2,000 m and La Om at 2,238 m. It frames the views from the Curmătura area.
Carpathian wildlife: Piatra Craiului is brown-bear country and also holds chamois and wolves. The cliffs support Dianthus callizonus, the endemic Piatra Craiului pink.

Challenges to expect

The standard loop is not technical, but the steady forest climb to Curmătura Hut gives around 600 m of ascent. Expect gravel and dirt road, a stony gorge floor, rooty forest path and possible mud after rain. Waymarking is established, but follow the correct return trail rather than turning the walk into an out-and-back. High summer can be busy, and the route is in brown-bear habitat.
