The San Bernardino Loop is a 5.8 km easy circular day walk from San Bernardino village in Italian-speaking Graubünden, Switzerland. It follows waymarked Swiss footpaths beside the Moesa river to the Lago d'Isola reservoir and returns to the village, with about 141 m of ascent and a high point around 1,790 m. Allow about 1.5–2 hours. This is a gentle half-day lake circuit, not a long-distance trek or a climb to the San Bernardino Pass.

Route Overview

Start and finish in San Bernardino village at about 1,639 m. The loop heads out along the young Moesa river, using gentle riverside paths and forest tracks through larch and spruce, before reaching Lago d'Isola. The key moment is the dam crossing, with open views over the reservoir and surrounding Lepontine Alps, then the route loops back to the village on marked local footpaths. No point-to-point transport is needed once you are in San Bernardino. San Bernardino: Pass and Village Background

San Bernardino village and the nearby pass take their name from Saint Bernardino of Siena, a Franciscan preacher canonised in 1450. A chapel dedicated to him was built on the southern side of the pass after about 1450, and by 1467 local innkeepers were charged with maintaining the trail, ringing the chapel bell and collecting tolls. The San Bernardino Pass above the village has long been a trans-Alpine crossing, later served by a road and, from 1967, the road tunnel. This is background to the area; the lake loop itself does not cross the pass.

Notable highlights

Lago d'Isola reservoir: The focus of the walk, reached shortly above San Bernardino village. The dam crossing gives the clearest open views across the water to the surrounding Lepontine peaks.
Moesa riverside: An easy, shaded valley-floor section follows the young Moesa river through larch and spruce before the route reaches the lake.
San Bernardino village: A small Italian-speaking Alpine resort in the Misox/Mesolcina valley and the practical start and finish for the loop.
Extended lake tour option: A longer variant of about 8.6 km links Lago di San Bernardino, Lago d'Isola and Lago Dosso for a fuller half-day circuit.
San Bernardino Pass nearby: The 2,066 m road pass is above the village and is a separate objective, not part of this lake loop. It is relevant for the area’s history and wider Alpine setting.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy walk, but it is still an Alpine lake circuit at about 1,640–1,790 m. Expect dirt and stony paths, forest tracks and a dam crossing; sections can be muddy after bad weather. Snow can linger outside the late spring to autumn walking season. Navigation is generally straightforward on Swiss yellow signs and red-white-red blazes, but check you are following the short Lago d'Isola loop rather than a longer variant.
