The Rondane Traverse is a ~60 km, 4-day hut-to-hut loop in Rondane National Park, Innlandet, eastern Norway. Known in Norway as the Rondane Triangle, or Trekanten, it links the staffed DNT lodges at Rondvassbu, Dørålseter and Bjørnhollia from Spranget above Mysusæter, near Otta. DNT grades it Medium: suitable for fit hikers used to long mountain days, rough boulder and scree terrain, river crossings and changeable fjell conditions, but with no technical climbing on the standard route.
Route Overview
Start at Spranget car park/bus stop, reached from Mysusæter above Otta, then follow the loop Spranget–Rondvassbu–Dørålseter–Bjørnhollia–Rondvassbu–Spranget. The first and last sections use the easy gravel access road by Lake Rondvatnet; the main triangle crosses Rondhalsen, Bergedalen/Dørålen, Langglupdalen and Illmanndalen between staffed DNT lodges. Rondvassbu is the hub, with an optional seasonal ferry on Rondvatnet. The long middle leg is also listed separately as the Dørålseter to Bjørnhollia stage. Rondane: Norway’s First National Park
Rondane became Norway’s first national park on 21 December 1962, created largely to protect one of the country’s last wild reindeer herds. It was greatly enlarged in 2003, again for reindeer conservation. The rounded quartzite massif also has a strong cultural presence: it appears in Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and in Harald Sohlberg’s 1914 painting Winter Night in the Mountains. The traverse uses the long-established DNT mountain hut network.
Notable highlights
- Rondvassbu and Lake Rondvatnet: Rondvassbu is the main DNT hub on the route, sitting at the south end of the 5–6 km Lake Rondvatnet. A seasonal ferry crosses the lake and can shorten summit days.
- Optional 2,000-metre peaks: Rondeslottet, at 2,178 m, and Storronden, at 2,138 m, can be climbed from Rondvassbu. They are optional detours, not part of the standard triangle.
- Langglupdalen valley: The Dørålseter–Bjørnhollia stage passes through this wild, narrow glacial valley, hemmed by Rondeslottet and Storronden to the south and Høgronden, Midtronden and Digerronden to the north. It is one of the route’s most enclosed, rugged sections.
- Wild reindeer country: Rondane is one of Norway’s last strongholds for wild mountain reindeer, with about 2,000–4,000 across Rondane-Dovre. Keep your distance and avoid disturbing animals if you encounter them.
- Rondane’s cultural landscape: The massif inspired Sohlberg’s Winter Night in the Mountains, viewable from the Sohlbergplassen lay-by, and features in Ibsen’s Peer Gynt.
Challenges to expect
The Rondane Traverse is moderate rather than technical, but it is not an easy walk. Expect long stages of up to about 21 km and 7–9 hours, rough boulder fields, scree, moraine, open fjell and river crossings. Snow can linger into late June, and weather can change quickly in exposed terrain. The route is red-T waymarked, but poor visibility still demands competent navigation.
