The Bordeaux to Arcachon Trail is an approximate 60 km, 2-day point-to-point route in France, linking Bordeaux with Arcachon on the Bassin d’Arcachon. It crosses the Gironde coastal plain and the Landes de Gascogne pine forest before reaching oyster ports and the Atlantic coast. Difficulty is moderate for walkers because the days are long, not because the terrain is technical: the corridor is flat, often paved or gravel, and mostly follows cycle greenways and quiet roads rather than a dedicated GR footpath.
Route Overview
Start in central Bordeaux, around the Garonne quays or Place de la Bourse, then head west or south-west through the urban fringe near Pessac and Cestas towards the Landes de Gascogne forest. The route then follows a flat greenway and forest-track corridor towards the head of the Bassin d’Arcachon, with Le Teich and its bird reserve a natural late waypoint. The final section reaches the oyster ports around Gujan-Mestras and La Teste-de-Buch before finishing in Arcachon. This is best treated as a point-to-point walk using map/GPS navigation, with rail connections at Bordeaux and Arcachon. History of the Bordeaux–Arcachon Corridor
The route follows a corridor shaped by 19th-century transport and land management. The Landes de Gascogne was once marsh and moving dunes before drainage and maritime-pine planting, formalised by an 1857 law, created the vast forest crossed today. Arcachon developed as a seaside resort after the Bordeaux–La Teste railway reached the bay in 1841, drawing visitors from Bordeaux to the beaches and pine air. Many modern greenways in the area reuse former railway or forestry alignments.

- Bordeaux and the Garonne quays: Start in Bordeaux’s UNESCO-listed centre, with 18th-century riverside façades, Place de la Bourse and the miroir d’eau reflecting pool.
- Landes de Gascogne pine forest: The long middle section crosses the northern edge of a vast maritime-pine forest, giving flat, repetitive but distinctive forest walking.
- Réserve ornithologique du Teich: Near Le Teich, this wetland reserve in the Eyre/Leyre delta has trails and hides for watching resident and migratory birds.
- Bassin d’Arcachon oyster ports: The route reaches a large tidal lagoon with traditional oyster-farming towns such as Gujan-Mestras.
- Arcachon: Finish in the Belle Époque seaside resort known for beaches, Ville d’Hiver villas and easy onward rail links.
- Dune du Pilat, optional detour: South of Arcachon, Europe’s tallest sand dune is a popular side trip rather than part of the direct line.
Challenges to expect
The main challenge is endurance: two roughly 30 km walking days on flat but sometimes monotonous surfaces. There is no dedicated Bordeaux-to-Arcachon GR waymarking, so use a map or GPS and expect to share greenways with cyclists. Summer can be hot, with exposed sections, limited resupply and wildfire restrictions in the Landes. Spring and autumn are milder but dirt or sandy sections can be wet or muddy.

Leave central Bordeaux via the Garonne quays and south-western suburbs such as Pessac or Cestas, then transition from urban streets and greenways into the flat pine-forest landscape of the Landes de Gascogne. Navigation is by map/GPS rather than GR waymarks.
Continue west towards the Bassin d’Arcachon, using the greenway and forest-track corridor towards Le Teich, the Eyre/Leyre delta and the bay’s oyster ports. Finish in Arcachon, with the Dune du Pilat possible as a separate add-on.
