The Prielom Hornádu Trail is a waymarked gorge walk in Slovenský raj National Park, eastern Slovakia. The Hornád canyon is almost 12 km long; the common Čingov to Podlesok crossing is 10.9 km and takes about 4 hours, while the full gorge crossing is listed at around 7 hours. It is a moderate day hike for sure-footed walkers: ladders, chains, foot-pegs and cliffside walkways make it exciting, but unsuitable for dogs or small children.

Route Overview

Most hikers walk Prielom Hornádu point-to-point between Čingov and Podlesok, using the summer shuttle bus or public bus to return. Key access points and branches include Smižany, Letanovský mlyn, Biely potok, Kláštorská roklina and Hrdlo Hornádu. The route stays low in the gorge, following the Hornád on narrow riverside paths with repeated equipped sections above the water. Loop options connect via Tomášovský výhľad or Kláštorisko; if you want a focused side-gorge climb, see the Kláštorská Gorge Trail. For a bigger Slovak mountain itinerary, compare it with the Low Tatras Ridge Trail.

How the Prielom Hornádu Gorge Trail Opened

For decades, Prielom Hornádu was effectively impassable on foot. The riverside trail was completed in 1974 by members of the Mountain Rescue Service, who installed the ladders, chains and bridges that allow walkers to pass the canyon today. The wider area became Slovenský raj National Park in 1988. The name “paradise” is linked to the medieval Carthusian monks of Kláštorisko, whose monastery ruins remain one of the main historical stops above the gorge.

Notable highlights

  • Ladders, chains and catwalks over the Hornád: The signature sections use steel ladders, foot-pegs, chains and cliffside walkways bolted into the rock. They make the canyon passable where the river squeezes the path against the cliffs.
  • Hornád canyon walls: The river has cut a canyon-like valley with limestone banks up to 150 m high. In the narrowest sections, the route feels more like a protected gorge traverse than a standard forest walk.
  • Kláštorisko and its Carthusian monastery ruins: This clearing at 760 m is reached via connecting routes, including Kláštorská roklina. It holds the ruins of a Carthusian monastery founded around 1299.
  • Tomášovský výhľad viewpoint: A flat-topped rock terrace about 200 m above the gorge near Spišské Tomášovce. It gives wide views over the Hornád canyon towards the High Tatras.
  • Kláštorská roklina: This side gorge links the main Hornád route up to Kláštorisko. Expect waterfalls, cascades, ladders and footbridges; it is covered separately in the Kláštorská Gorge Trail.

Challenges to expect

The trail is not technically difficult, but the exposure is real: ladders, chains, foot-pegs and narrow cliffside walkways require balance and a head for heights. Rock, gravel, forest soil and wooden or steel bridges can be slippery when wet. High water, ice and winter conditions can make the gorge hazardous or impassable. Stay on marked trails inside the reserve and check seasonal closures, especially on side gorges.
